I have a really really good friend (like since elementary school) that's moving from there to start med school. I'll see if I can get in touch with her via facebook and get some info to you.
Asheville is a gorgeous place....but as to workplaces and such, I can't tell you. It's a pretty hippie-granola-crunchy place if you're into that sort of thing. :)
We visited the area for several days in October 07, and loved it. The people were friendly, it was easy to get around in, and it was just gorgeous. Of course, at that time we weren't looking to relocate, and I wasn't looking for work! I do seem to remember several hospitals in the area, and some colleges and universities for furthering education opportunities.
Thanks everyone for your information!
I have a friend who works at Mission. They do have a hiring freeze, but that doesn't mean they won't hire. It just means that a position must be vacated before it can be filled--essentially they cannot create any new positions, and some positions have been eliminated altogether. Also, I noticed you said "we." You may have a easier time getting a job as a nurse, but beware Asheville's job market. Depending on what field he/she is in, your other half may really struggle with finding work.
I'm from Asheville, although I'm not currently living there. Feel free to contact me if you have any other questions that you think I might be able to help answer.
Good luck!
Hello from Asheville and congratulations on your life changing graduation!
Asheville is indeed beautiful. We have tons of outdoor activities, museums, historical landmarks, and cultural activities such as Folkmoot and Bele Chere. We also have our share of hippies that beg for money and drive BMWs, tourists, and high costs of living.
As far as work goes nurses are so much better off than most professionals because we are always needed. That being said, the main hospital in Ashe-vegas is Mission Hospitals and it is in a hiring freeze.

Not only is Mission in downtown Asheville, but they are associated with several other smaller hospitals in the area.
On the Saint Joseph campus of Mission Hospitals is a LTACH called Asheville Specialty Hospital. Not sure of their hiring status. They are a joint venture between Mission Hospitals and CarePartners. Here is the site they post jobs on.https://www.carepartners.org/pagedisplay.cfm?mainpage=31&subpage=88
I forgot to ask: What kind of job are you seeking? Hospital? Visiting health position? Doctors office?
I suggest a healthy introduction to Medical-Surgical nursing.
Anyway. There is Haywood Regional, which just got purchased by a big health system. (Purchased? Merged? Adopted? Whatever!) Haywood had been in some trouble with the state but got their rights back.

I will be graduating in a week, and have a position lined up here in upstate NY. We are considering a move to Asheville/Hendersonville, but that won't happen for at least a year.
I was wondering if any of you who live and work there have any information about your facilities/job satisfaction and way of life you'd consider sharing with me...?
