Duke Absn Health equity Academy ??

U.S.A. North Carolina

I applied for duke absn for the fall 2015 start. I also took the option to be considered for the health equity academy. Can anyone tell me more about this program? Does this program cover most of the tuition if selected? Approx. how much? Thanks.

They might do some changes to the program....BUT for me, we came in the summer for six weeks and lived on campus. The program is a way for you to look at obstacles and barriers that people face (i.e. financial, education, living conditions, etc) and how they play a role in their health care AND what we as healthcare professionals can do. It opens your eyes to the nursing profession and is a way to prepare you for the nursing program. You will take two classes. One was for a grade and the other one was more of an intro class in which they help you get some idea of the material that will be covered in the fall. During the summer, we had workshops, team-building activities, hospital shadowing, and a lot more. We were given a mentor and we got to meet with faculty members as well as other nurses. The six weeks was jam-packed, we had somewhere to be and something to do everyday. So the pace is very fast but you will learn a lot about DUSON, the nursing profession and yourself. We also did a windshield survey about two communities in Durham so we got to learn about Durham. We did have fun too...explore Durham, try new restaurants, go to the beach, etc. During the fall, we still meet as a group and did activities such as meeting with the dean, we were assigned a mentee from high school and we are currently writing a paper as a group about our experience with HEA. As far as finances, the program does not pay a large amount of the bill. I can't tell you how much is given because there might be changes to what they will give to the new cohort. But I would say to still look for scholarships and look into loans. Let me know if you have any more questions.

Thank you so much for the information. I am just trying to figure out if it would be worth it to accept if selected. Is it worth the time and money ?

I would say that the HEA program is amazing, but you also need to decide if DUSON is the school for you. I loved HEA because it focused on health topics that I was interested in such as health disparities and working with underserved communities. But I felt that Duke could provide me with the knowledge, skills and opportunities. So for me, getting accepted into HEA and the nursing program was the vanilla sundae with the cherry on top lol. But I think you would need to see if it is worth it for you. But you can always contact me if you have any questions about Duke or HEA.

Hello,

How many people applied/interviewed to the HEA program during your cohort and how many were ultimately accepted? Thanks!

Hello. I've just been accepted into the HEA program for the summer 2015 cohort. Could you private message me and talk in more depth about what I would be doing? Any free time? Stipend? How to get around? Thank you.

JazBerri,

I just completed my HEA interview! I was so nervous. They had some issues with Skype so we couldn't see other, but the interview still lasted 15 minutes.

did you get in? i did
