I have not personally attended NSU. I'm starting TCC in the fall. But I wanted to tell you that I have always heard the NSU has the absolute best BSN program in the area. I hope someone who attends there will chime in and give you the info that you are looking for.
Tell me about TCC, how was it?

You might want to check out the school's NCLEX pass rate on the State Board of Nursing's web site. That would give you an indication of whether or not their graduates are able to pass the test and actually get an RN license. While I never advocate making a decision based on 1 piece of information, it is one piece of information you might want to have.
The VA State Board of Nursing website can be found at:

The information can currently be found under the section "educational programs"

Hi Princess,
Tcc has been good for me, I have been there for four years part-time. I didn't have any problems, other than readjusting to studying while working and a family. It has not been easy but I keep pushing myself, and tried to keep focused. I transfered to NSU with a 3.8 so I am pleased. However, TCC's Nursing Program is limited to only one campus in Portsmouth. The wait list is 2 years long so that's why I Opt to trns to NSU. I could have waited it out, and sometimes someone will drop and you may get lucky and get in. TCC has a very good passing rate. I have been an LPN for 6 yrs. and I am ready to make my transition to RN. I am interested in Nursing/Health Education. My long term goal is teaching, which will require higher education so pursuing a BSN is the best way to go for my needs.
Good Luck at TCC, it is a long process just to get through your prereqs but it will be worth it. I can tell you about some of the instructors if you like. What are taking first?

Hi,
Yes I have done that, and their passing rates aren't that great, however I have met a few nurses in the field that attended NSU. Most of them where pleased with the program. I was hoping to get some more feedback from others. I also checked their accrediation status, there aren't up for review until 2009, according to NLN. I had a hard time trying to find out the specifics of their last review. In the community the word is that they have had trouble maintaining an adequate passing rate. And their admission rates are low as well. It seems that not many of the younger generation are interested in Nursing, but I think that is a Nationwide concern.
Thanks

Humm... they told me that they didn't have a waiting list as of right now. I better ask about that again. I'm going to the 2 hour RN seminar thing tomorrow afternoon, hopefully I can find out more there.
I have a meeting with an adviser next week to find out how I did on my placement test. I'm almost positive that I did well on the reading comp and the english but I know I bombed out on the math! So I plan on taking math 1, bio, english 111, A&P 1. I'll have to take chem in the spring (didn't want to take it until after I get my math skills up to par) along with A&P 11, Eng 112, and orientation to healthcare. I think thats all of them. I wont know for sure what I have to take until after my meeting with the advisor though. I want to try to get everything out of the way as soon as I can, I'd like to apply to the nursing program for Fall 2006, especially if they have a waiting list. I would love to hear about the instrustors. I want to avoid the bad ones lol.
That maybe true that was as of last year. My friend just finished she wait about one year after completing her prereqs. Make sure you call the program coordinator directly in Portsmouth, and ask about the wait list if any. You may find out the specifics at the seminar....The key is to get on the list as soon as possible. She got on the list began her prereqs which took a year to complete and then a year wait...which made it two years before starting any nursing courses.
Before I tell you about instructors What campus are you attending ?
I went to VB and Chesapeake....Most of the instructors I know of are at VB.

I will be attending the VB campus. I will definatly talk with the program coordinator, thanks so much for all the info.:)
Hi again,
Great VB: ok here are the ones that I made A's in.
Eng - Gloria Grant- Very supportive and gives individual attention if needed.
I took 112 on-line it was much more work...it's better to go to class just because of the workload....it was more of a convenience. and, the course was very easy to follow. Had no trouble.
Psych - Charles Mclane or Ms. Pettus either excellent. Gives extra credit assignments.
Soc- Pettus, I don't know if you need this, it use to be a requirement
A&P - Fowler - some thinks she grades hard, however she explains lecture so well that if you do what you are suppose to you will have the foundation you need. With Any sciences you must study hard and apply yourself.
I didn't take her but I heard Sugarmyer is a good lecturer too.
I took intro to healthcare in 3 weekends....a quicky course fri, Sat. I didn't buy the book either...depends on the instructor. It was fri 6-10 and sat all day but they usually let you leave early...we wrote 2 papers and one exam.
It went by so quick I can't remember who I took....they also offer this class in the 8 week session, psych, soc too.
Word of advice don't take two sciences together and take your math before taking CHM. Good luck...Let me know how your seminar goes...

Hello:
Hopefully I will start to take my pre-req's at NSU in summer 06. I would like to apply to the 2nd degree BSN program at NSU for summer 07. How is the teaching environment at NSU? Can either of you give me some advice?

i am also interested in the bsn program at nsu. i am a recent graduate from nsu with a ba in public relations. i started out as a nursing major but changed to pr during my sophomore year. currently, i'm working on my masters in urban affairs but i want to pursue nursing.
i've completed all but 14 of the required 72 hours in pre req courses for the 2nd year bsn program. does anyone know if there is a waiting list at nsu? when i was in pre nursing, the program was very competitive and the waiting list was extensive.
for those studying at norfolk state, what do you think about the program and professors?
thank you in advance for responding
