Has anyone completed their program at NSU; ADN or BSN. Please tell me about your experience there.
I Have just transfered from TCC. To start in May.
Thanks for any input.....
thanks for the information. what do you think about the department now? i heard that some changes were made since i left the program in 2000 or are you in contact with professors in the nursing department? i am asking because i am not sure if i want to pursue nsu or the medical careers institute. however, nsu is looking good to me right now financially:chuckle
Hi,
Not really sure about instructors personally, but I have heard that they
are really trying to get things moving in a good direction.
My friend just grad last May she did the LPN-ADN with no
problems as in any school some instructors where better
than others. She past her boards. My interactions so far have
been positive except that is still seems a bit unorganized, but I also
think that the facility and advisiors have so many students that they
have hard time keeping up and that they don't really have a good
organizational system within the dept.
If you check the Virginia Board
of Nursing web site you will see that the Passing rates have
really improved. Last two classes were 86% and 100%.
I checked out MCI too, I felt a bit uneasy with high tuition
and no passing rates to compare yet. There first class with be
finishing up in May. Another problem I had with them is that they
are so accelerated that it has to be a Mon-Thurs 8-4 or evenings
6-10. Not very flexible for someone who works and has a family as I do.
How was it in 2000 what was your oppinion on the program, did you withdraw ? Stay in touch, and I will continue to fill you in on the happenings
@ NSU......Good Luck
hi,
[color=#9acd32]
[color=#9acd32]thank you so much for responding. it is funny that you mention the unorganization of the department, that is one thing that has not changed since i switched majors in 2000.
[color=#9acd32]
[color=#9acd32]i have been trying to get in contact with the admission coordinator in the department of nursing @ nsu since yesterday and have been unable to. i called her today and she told me that she will give me a call back because she was registering students, the work day is over...and i waited all day to speak with her to discuss my goals and the remaining prereq's i need to take. :angryfire
[color=#9acd32]
[color=#9acd32]i am about to withdraw from the current graduate program that i am in @ nsu and switch to nursing (bsn) as an undergraduate (2nd degree) but i need to speak with her regarding the proper procedure before i withdraw from grad school;) . classes begin monday and i need to be registered with an advisor in the nursing dept before late registration begins. i guess i will have to wait to change to undergrad, 2nd degree status because speaking to her or anyone in the department, other than the secretary, seems impossible:rolleyes: . have you taken a&p or math 105? if so, how were these classes?
[color=#9acd32]
[color=#9acd32]i've checked out old dominion univ nursing program too. their test scores are wonderful plus the school itself is well established and much more organized :yelclap:. this may be the place for me. as you can see, i am still in the first phase of my confusion...i'll just pray about it and hopefully gain clarity.
[color=#9acd32]
[color=#9acd32]i will definitely keep you posted
I would suggest going there in person or try to schedule an appt via email. She is really good with email responses usually. Have you checked the website for second degree curriculum, that may give you an idea of what you need. I haven't taken the mth 105 but I hear it's not the best instruction there. They rely heavily on website exercises instead of teaching. I am taking A&P this semester, I also picked up two classes online. I love on classes they are soooooo covenient, they are through tcc,
I didn't know you could take classes at other schools, you just have get it approved by your dept. I may try to take other generals like statisics, mth and politics. ODU didn't do that well last two quarters and actually nsu did. They did 86% and then 100% just this last class. But, I hear that ODU is still better overall, as far as their teaching. Both schools, unfortuantly are having trouble with faculty. There is large shortage in faculty just as the national shortage of nurses. It such a shame, because it is quality of care that suffers.
Talk to you soon.....
A WORD OF WARNING the reason that NSU has a high NCLEX board pass rate is because they have implemented an exit exam. The exit exam is an NCLEX like test that they use to determine if you will pass the NCLEX, and IF YOU DON'T PASS IT YOU DON'T GET A DEGREE. You have to wait an entire year and come back the next summer and retake it! They have failed a lot of students!

Thanks for the information. I was wondering why their NCLEX pass rate suddenly improved so much.
Students need to know that before they choose a school. They need to ask, "How many students do you accept into the program?" and "How many students graduate in the expected number of semesters?"

Hi Guys I thought this thread died,
Finished up my first year and yes that is true, also they don't allow to even take the boards if you don't pass that exit exam.....so the only reason the rates have increased is because only those that score high were eligible to set for their board and get their degree. I learned all these things while there. I had high hopes in getting my RN at NSU, but I am not hearing great things about the program itself, I hear the instruction is not the greatest, and that the student are not very welcomed at clinic sites. I am really disappointed......looking for a new school, or I might just return to community college and wait it out on their very long wait list.
So how far have you guys gotten in your process ?
TCC is in the process of dramatically increasing its enrollment. They plan to admit a class in January now as well as in September. In the past, they only admitted in September.
If you haven't talked with TCC lately, you should probably look at them again. There might not be much of a wait anymore.
Depending on exactly where you live (or where you could move to) ... The community college in Franklin has also recently started an ADN program. Some of the instructors, etc. from the program at Obici (that closed a few years ago) are teaching in the Franklin program. The Obici program was a very good one.
ODU is the premier program in the region, but it is expensive and tough to get into.
Good luck,

Thanks a bunch.
That is great news. I spent 6,000 at NSU last year. I have already checked the classes I need next sememster at TCC, I have 30 general credits from TCC so far. and 20 from NSU. A lot of classes I took aren't even a requirement for ADN. Because I was taking classes for BSN.
I'm in Virgina Beach, how far is Franklin ? If I can get in it might be worth the commute, TCC is already a commute for me to Portsmouth.
Is it Franklin Community College ?
Things may be looking up for me.

The community college in Franklin is called Paul DuKamp (spelling?) Community College. I don't know exactly how long/far the commute would be for you.
I assume you have looked into the Virginia Beach campus of Hampton University? Their BSN program (in Virginia Beach) has slightly higher NCLEX pass rates than the campus in Hampton and would be in your own neighborhood. I've known a couple of people who have gone there who seem happy enough -- and it IS a BSN program.

Hi,
This is my second semester, however I am still working on Prereqs not actually in the program yet. With your academic background I think you would have a great chance of getting in for May. If the deadline hasn't already past. Even if it has I would send in an application anyway, a spot may open because of those who drop or just decide not to start that semester.
Or shoot for the May/2007 class. There is no waiting list.
Good Luck
