Non-disciplinary LPN license and future employment and misdemeanor

Nurses Criminal

Published

Nursing school: Graduated nursing school back in 12/15.

Age: 30

Reason: Being a guy, alone, stressed from nursing school, got lonely after a breakup. Didn't know the consequences of actions. I tried it because I got curious for a short happiness.

Misdemeanor: 03/15-Charge of "offering or engage in an act of lewdness" which was amended to disturbance of peace.

Amended misdemeanor: 07/16-Disturbance of Peace.

Question: Is there a chance for me to have future employments with hospitals? I currently work in a LTC facility and work as a Homecare CNA. Or is the future to dim for me to hope for? :(

I was planning to go further in nursing and hopefully becoming an ICU doctor/anesthesiologist someday. Any advise? Please and thank you.

About me: I've always been a nice guy, nice to my residents, been helpful to others. No prior criminal history. Quiet tenant, never bothered anybody. Semi-introvert (been working on my people skills since 2007). 3.9GPA. I've never been interested in doing drugs, non-smoker, not a gambler.

Whatever you do, do not state that you "didn't know consequences for actions." At your age, that just sounds like an excuse.

It sounds like the charge was reduced to something relatively minor. If questioned, I would emphasize the positive strides you have made since the incident. Give the minimum amount of specific detail and don't make excuses for the behavior.

We have a "licensure with a criminal record" forum here on AN. You might get some really good advice there. Many have been able to overcome worse charges than yours. If possible, work to get this conviction expunged at the earliest possible date.

Good luck to you.

Thank you. I was gonna edit that part, but was too late. Do you know if hospitals will still hire someone like me? please advise. Thanks.

You can do a quick google search for "list of disqualifying crimes for nurses" and get multiple hits. The most common element is that they're typically person crimes -- domestic violence, sexual assault, homicide, etc. Disturbing the peace could mean a lot of things.

If you're going to be job searching in a difficult job market then any tiny thing can get your application thrown out. But I doubt this is a career-ending conviction. If you're legally able to still be a CNA, then you can legally still be a nurse. I can't imagine any restrictions would be placed on your license.

You said you graduated almost a year ago. Have you been making applications? Have you passed your boards?

I have applied as a cna. I have been turned down by some agencies because they mentioned that my situation doesn't correspond with their principles.

I haven't passed my board exam yet because of my case that was just recently been finalized, now I am able to take the test.

You're absolutely right, it is a very difficult job market.

I'm kind of worried if the same thing applies to nurses if agencies would turn me down because it doesn't go along with their principles.
