I have a HS student who has been diabetic for most of his life. Non compliant, always has been from what I understand. Won't do simple things like eat appropriate amount or check ketones when necessary. Obviously can't force him to do either. How would you handle? Parental help/involvement will be slim to none.

Is there a more mature diabetic peer or teacher with diabetes who might intervene 'speaking his language' as it were?

Have him visit the local dialysis clinic....that's where my two latest 16 y/o and 18 y/o noncompliant diabetics are spending their after-school time.

I guess I would try to make a contract with the student. I won't come and pull you out of three classes a day if you agree to (fill in the minimum of what you need). The risk is if you annoy him too much he might quit coming to school. Or try something gradual, just ask him to come once a day and build up from there. In any case, it's a tough situation.
