I spoke to the teacher at the local community college today in Orange County and she said no one is hiring LVN's these days, especially not in hospitals. She said the LVN's we see at hospitals are students, not employee's. Are any LVN's working in hospitals?
Also, for the LVN's in southern CA, especially Orange County, what did you make your first year?
If the shifts are 12 hour shifts, then we are paid 8 straight hours and 4 hours of OT. 3 days on equals 36 hours. Do they allow overtime on the 4th day? If we want OT can you get it easily to make more money?
Also, is the shift differential standard everywhere you go?

Here in Illinois where I live LPN's can work LTC, clinics, or homecare. They do not hire LPN's at the hospital at all. I worked at one of the hospitals in pharmacy for 14 years, while I was in LPN school I asked one of the floors if I could work as a CNA to get a little more hands on with patient care. They told me that once I graduated from LPN school that I would be terminated or have to quit because they would not keep me on staff as a LPN. How frustrating considering I'd been in that hospital for 14 years. All I can say is that if the hospitals here every get so short of nurses they decide to rehire LPN's, they can go to h__ll, after the way the hospital I worked at treated me. I wouldn't work in a hospital until LPN's are treated as a nurse who has their own scope of practice and are not considered a burden on the RN's. During clinicals at one of the other hospitals I actually had a RN BSN tell me that the reason hospitals don't hire LPN's is because they're needy, inconvenient, and don't know how to critical think. Needless to say I left my clinical that day crying. I have no room for arrogance in my world.
That is awful!! I was in RN and LPN school in IL before. Belleville. (Hubby was in the Air Force, so we moved, and got re-stationed there 2x). I should have stayed the 6 months and finished there, but I transferred my credits to South Carolina, and then after I arrived, I went to sign up for classes to start my RN, and the program was frozen for 3 years until they could hire enough instructors to teach the 600 or so nurses already accepted and waiting to begin!!
Anyway, I hate they did that to you, what a slap in the face for being a loyal employee. If they had any sense, they would have realized that you would have been a great employee, and loyal and caring!! I just can't get over big business cutting their noses off in spite of their faces!!

i work in the dfw area and work for a large agency and it has just come to my attention that one of the main hospital systems in our area does use lvn's, now they wont hire them ,but they use them through agency..go figure.i have been a agency nurse for years and i'm just now finding this out. over the course of the next month i have 3 rehab hospital orientations and 2 major hospital orientations....i have worked at 3 of these before and just have to go back in and re-orient...

In Northern CA. LVNs are hired mostly in LTC, home health, and a few registrys with SNF placement only. You will need 1 year experience usually for registrys. I don't believe there are new grad programs for LVNs like there are for new RN graduates.
I looked online here in the SoCal area, and there were lots of jobs with Kaiser Permanente, but a lot of them were on call, in LA or other areas far from where I would live. I did see one in Irvine for Urology. I was told that Mission Hospital will hire LVNs and the school I am attending said they hire directly from our school. I wonder if that really is the case, but I do plan on going ahead and starting an RN program as soon as I can.
I did get a call yesterday from Indiana State U. and I am going to meet with an advisor to see how much of my old nursing classes, pre-reqs and other classes are transferrable and that they will accept and substitute. I would love it if they will substitute some of my old college credits for a newer class....like Theater and drama for a humanities, they said they would over the phone...but you never know.
I used to work at a LTF way back when, as a nurse's aide, and I loved it, but it was hard, back breaking work. My problem was my back, I weighed about 180 at the time, but I also found myself getting so attached to the residents, and when the passed away, it just tore me up. I also had 2 small kids at the time.
My husband is gone a lot of the month flying (he is a pilot with Boeing) and when he is not flying, he is at work and then is in an MBA program with Pepperdine 2 nights per week, so I am home alone a lot!! I figured it was a great time to finish my degree and get back to what I am passionate about.
I would love to do mission trips with our church. They always have a need for nurses, pharmacy techs and any certified trained medical professionals to go over to different countries. Last month our church in SC went to Honduras and built 2 clinics to help with child birth. Most women over there do not have pre-natal care and when they give birth, a lot of the babies die because they do not understand sterile techniques and basic sanitary procedures. Just giving them sterile razor blades and plastic coverings and antibiotic ointment for the baby's eyes have saved lives. So, they built 2 clinics and a school for the kids, and the nurses all gave injections at the school for the entire village and taught women how to deliver babies and gave out medicines. That is what I feel so called to do. I would love, love to go and help people and save lives :) That is why I want to be a nurse....which is sooo off topic, but anyway =)

i have read a lot of your (txspadequeen) posts. you are doing wonderful!! my hubby might get transferred with boeing to san antonio. so you have been an lvn for how long?? are you planning to get an rn degree as well, now that you are in tx??
i really enjoy reading your posts, they have really helped me figure out a lot since i have decided to go back to school. i just kills me that it is so hard to get into an rn program here in ca!! but, i suppose that is anywhere. my son is/was a pre-med major at oral roberts university in tulsa, but realistically his grades have been pretty mediocre for med school. he had asked me about nursing, his best friend is doing the bsn program at oru, so he told me there were a lot of male students, and he loved the medical field, so he switched his major to bsn beginning in the fall. long story short, oru has no waiting list, and accept as many students into the bsn program that apply. this applies to non-traditional students as well. i wish i could move to tulsa for a couple of years and finish there, but that is not practical with my hubby living in ca. (we just moved to ca last august and i still have to get used to all the traffic and people....there are tons and millions of people everywhere!!) lol:lol2:

a little about me....in august of 05, i had gastric bypass after being overdosed with steriods, and gaining over 100lbs!!! in one month!! i literally gained 100lbs in one month, my skin split open and my body began to shut down. my adrenal glands stopped working, my liver was shutting down, my kidneys had problems, everything had problems. my husband had to feed me bathe me, and literally carry me as best he could, everywhere. i had a cane and a walker and had to learn to walk all over again!!
i was at the medical university of south carolina every 2 days for an entire 8 months!! it just plain sucked! so, i topped out about 303 pounds, and lost about 20 on my own. then i saw a show on tv about gastric bypass, and i had lap rny in august. i have lost almost 150lbs, and now weigh around 144-147 any given day. i am sooo happy!! it totally gave me my life back. my surgeon was hiring me to be the project manager, which was run by an rn msn, and i was going to be her assistant, but i had to go back to nursing school to be able to take the job and transition to full time, but in the mean time, i ran the outpatient volunteer program, and i was the liasion between the patients and their families as a volunteer. i was just going to start the program when we found out we were moving to ca.
so, we moved here, and have had a terrible time trying to meet people. most of the people i have met are friendly, if you can get them to speak to you, haha.
i had to have surgery in october for a clogged bile duct, (my gallbladder was removed long time ago) and after losing so much weight, the stones that are usually in your gallbladder were in my bile duct. so, i still have issues and trouble and pain and nausea caused by a clogged duct (we think scar tx has clogged it again, causing a stricture). i am going to see a new surgeon next week, dr whitgrove (carnie wilson's doc) for a 2nd opinion because my doc at uci med center wanted me to get a 2nd opinion because the bile duct specialist has such a big ego that no way would his surgery fail!! they had to do a lap assisted ercp because the anatomy is changed, and they could not do it via egd.
anyway, they are talking about doing a ptc, which the "interventionist radiologist" will go thru my liver, into the duct and then into the bile duct to place a stent. not sure i like the idea of someone just cutting open the liver and going thru there.....??
but, i am still much healthier than i was 2 years ago when i had sleep apnea, semi-high bp, and aodiabetes ii. i no longer have diabetes, sleep apnea, pain in my chest, joints and so forth. i still have pain in my herniated disks in my back, but not like i used to at 289!!
i am orginally from ga, and my hubby and i have been married for 21 years. my oldest son is 21, attends oral roberts u. in tulsa, my youngest son is 19 and attends biola and is majoring in computer science engineering. i am very blessed, and very happy to be starting nursing school finally, again and for the last time!!! (unless its for another degree).

I really would love to work in that part of nursing given the chance. So many docs/nurses need to know about bariatric patients, and our special needs. I woke up after surgery and saw the D5 running in my IV and I had to FORCE the doctor to DC it!! He couldn't understand why I couldn't be on sugar!! It makes me and other bypass patients dump, horribly! I was in the bathroom for hours after that, and when the nurse tried to put it back in, I refused, and made her use LR. I had to explain to both of them about the dangers of D5 in bypass patients, to the point if bad enough, it can put us in a type of "diabetic coma". We just can't handle sugar at all, so I have a medic alert bracelet that says No Glucose, No NG tubes or Scopes without XRay (because they can damage our newly constructed pouches) and our doctor's phone number. Too many horror stories of people who had NG tubes done while they were uncounsious and then had to have surgery because their pouch/stomach ruptured....and the more bypass patients out there, the more education is needed for our special needs.
HERE IN TEXAS THEY HAVE LVNS WORKING IN ALL AREAS OF THE HOPITAL EVEN IN ICU IF YOU HAVE ACLS, IV CERT, AND TELE EXP. IN HOUSTON WHERE I AM NOW, SOUTHWEST MEMORIAL, BEN TAUB(HARRIS COUNTY HOSPITAL DISTRICT) HCA HOPITALS, TENET, AND MORE. I HAVE WORKED AS AGENGY NURSE FOR 12 YEARS AND MAKE GOOD MONEY. i NEVER LACK FOR A JOB AND CAN MAKE MY OWN SCHEDULE. NOW THE AGENGY EVEN OFFERS SOME BENEFITS... Which part of Texas are you in? I am moving back to Houston the beginning of the year from SoCal after finishing lvn school and taking the boards in December. I am trying to find out if they limit lvn's scope or do they allow them to do whatever helps? also is the starting pay good?
I am in Houston working in the medical center, This is where a majority of the major hospitals are. Although they are expanding in every direction making sure their hospital is able to compete with the next. By this I mean memorial hermann is either across the street or down the street from st. luke's. with more and more people moving and visiting houston there is always going to be a job if you want it. good luck.
i am a rn nursing student in delaware and after your first year of clinicals, our school allows you to graduate with your lpn diploma so that you may get some work experience while finishing your last year of the rn programs. i, like many of my classmates, have graduated, passed the pn nclex and become licensed lpns only to find out that our local hospital, the only one in a 50 mile radius, only hires lpn for relief. the local ltc facilities and all of the agencies want at least one year of experience so now all of us are unemployed rn students with lpn licenses. the local hospital stated that there were no longer hiring lpns because they are trying to obtain "magnet" status within the next 5 years...whatever that means.... :smackingf

Here in Wa state (seattle/Tacoma area) There are limited openings for LPN's
in Hospitals, There are still some LPN's working, but many have been there
for years. Last year there was a Mass RIF of LPN's from all three hospitals
in Tacoma. What's interesting though is I'm an LPN and currently work
Agency,and the majority of shifts I work are in Hospitals.
