No nursing shortage or nursing jobs

Is there still really a nursing shortage? Can someone tell me where all of the nursing jobs are? I have a tons of BSN RN friends who have been unemployed for over a year. Forget about new grads :(

What everyone already said, plus remember that hospitals and insurance companies are also not keeping people in hospitals as long as they used to. The goal is discharge them to someplace: LTC, rehab, home, whatever. But get them out of the hospital. That also reduces the number of nurses employed by hospitals, perhaps permanently, many believe.

Actually, that is true. I work for several Major insurance companies doing medical review, and it is all about cost containment. (that's sort of what I do-work with the case managers in the hospitals/and UR to do discharge planning)

Not so much discharging them to Long Term Care...the goal is to keep them out of there...but get them out of the hospital as soon as it is safe and home--preferablly with home health care.

I'm not sure if that affects nursing numbers/I am more concerned with the hospitals cutting the RN/PT ratios...when I first began working ICU I had 1:1 or 1:2 nurse/pt ratio....by the time I left ICU in 2004 it was 2:4 on some nights....and that was vented patients....not pretty...the operative word in that sentance is "left"...........

I live in Philadelphia and it's proving to be super difficult to find a job. I went to a teaching hospital for nursing school and still not many of us have gotten offered jobs. Everyone wants experience but how can we get it if no one will give us a chance..?
