NO jobs for new nurses, I may quit school.

Hello Everyone,

I need some advise and I don't care if you are a seasoned or new nurse. I am wondering if I should quit nursing school because something that was supposed be a secure job is now in jeapardy by the economy. I have been hearing so much about a how New Grads can't get jobs. I mean is there even really a shortage? New nurses can't keep being put off because of experience, how else is a new nurse to get experience? I am wondering if I should do something else instead of wasting time and money on a profession where I won't get a job. Student loans intrests rates are creeping up more and more. So what does a person do? When a new nurse graduates he/she has six months after graduation, and deferring isn't always the answer. Some of us don't want to be in debt for the rest of our lives while we wait to see what the job market is doing to a profession that NO ONE can do without. I have heard some people say this to shall pass, but when? If anyone could shine some light on this I would be eternally grateful, as I don't want to give up because this is all I could ever see myself doing. I guess at this point I am just looking for encouragment or if I should change my major. Thanks:mad:

I agree with whomever said to slow down and not run up a lot of debt. I would suggest lightening your academic load to stretch out the time a bit, and working in a hospital as a PCT/CNA--this will help with your finances and possibly get your foot in the door.

I know it sounds like nothing but doom and gloom for new nurses. I just graduated with my BSN this past weekend, and all my classmates and I were hearing all semester was that there were no jobs out there for new nurses. Well, I applied everywhere I could think of and pretty much stalked a few people, and I was called back for a couple of interviews and ended up with 3 job offers. Despite all the horror stories I was hearing, I got a job and so did most people in my class. Yes, there are a few that still haven't gotten an interview or a job offer, but even if they have to wait a month, or two, or three, they will find something. I wouldn't quit and waste all this time and hard work just because the economy sucks. It's going to suck no matter what field you are in.

Thanks Everyone especially those who had something encouraging to say.

I am not going to quit. Just suffering from temporary melt down. Trust me won't happen again.

I am more than halfway through so I'll finish as for a job who cares one will come. And it's true the economy will be this way for a while. I have alread relocated for school and this is where I am going to stay if worse comes to worse I leave the country for better pastures lol. I have always wanted to go to Paris Hmmmm, why not give it a try. Thanks again Everyone.:lol2:

I don't know where you are located, but in our area - TEXAS, we still offer sign-on bonuses for 2-yr contracts (new grads included). Better relocate, than stay at home without a job.

I should add to my previous posting that, sure, if you are still dependent on your mom and dad, and they will provide or provide cash for: your housing, food, gas, clothing, medical/car insurance, car payments, school loan payments, etc. until you are gainfully employed -- then of course keep going!! There will be no other time in life that you can be dependent on your parents. Actually I think that you can remain on your parents medical insurance if you are well into your 20's these days even. Unfortunately, I don't believe there are too many of us who still rely on parents to pay our bills, so, debt considerations are important. It's not about being in it for the money, it's about living life as an adult with responsibilities and others to care for.

If you really want to become a nurse to become a nurse then stay in it. Those that are doing if for the money or job security will get scared away and make more room for people that will stick with it regardless of the uncertainly. Although it is uncertain WHEN the economy will turn around, there WILL be more nursing jobs...older nurses will retire as will the baby boomers...

if your real worried, and really want to be a nurse, and nothing else appeals to you, you could always try volunteering at a local hospital while your in school, get your foot and smiling helpful face in there and then maybe have a better shot at getting a job there as a new nurse. ??
