I don't know about everyone else, but the complete reluctance I've come up against of south jersey hospitals to look at a soon to be graduate nurse has really floored me. They all tell me to call back in August or September, when I'm graduating. And even then you can't work till you pass your boards. Am I insane to think that I can at least interview and get a job offer maybe a couple months in advance? I go to school in PA but I'm moving to jersey, and almost all my classmates have had jobs lined up for months! Especially when you are paying for school by yourself and running out of money, it would be nice to know you have a job. All I get from south jersey hospitals is the run around. Its like there is no shortage!
Monday I have an interview in Delaware.
Is this law/attitude making anyone else think about applying in other states? :uhoh21:

Maybe they don't have such a shortage there. If there is a shortage this law isn't doing much to address it. Since you are capable of moving around, I would just look elsewhere if I were you.

I don't know what hospitals you've been dealing with, but what you're describing is not what is happening throughout all of South Jersey. My local hospital system (South Jersey Healthcare) just hired 30 Graduate Nurses and we have until September to pass our boards. What is offered in this part of South Jersey is an externship during the summer before your senior year, and then you have first dibs at being hired as soon as you graduate.

Just keep trying. I worried because i was the last of my clinical group to find a job. We were told to apply before even graduating. I landed my job a month ago..which was a month after graduation. I passed boards last week and start working next week. It has been tight..but it's all working out.
Good luck!

I graduated in May but had three job offers by the beginning of April. One of the positions wanted me to start right away as a nurse extern then move into a GN position directly after graduation. When I asked about the use of the GN title, I was told that NJ does not recognize it but hospitals are offering positions that are the equivalent.
Keep plugging away. There are plenty of opportunities in South Jersey.
I guess maybe I'm just running into more troubles because I'm not graduating in the normal time frame of May when all the intern positions and such begin. I won't be done till August and a lot of places are telling me they've hired their quota of newbie nurses, and maybe more positions will open up in september.
Thanks for all the encouragement. The second someone actually asks me to interview, I'm gonna be sure and jump on it! At the very least after 6 mos to a year in Delaware if I end up there, I'll be in demand as "experienced". At least more so than now.

Its sad to say but they are like that here. I just graduated from Ocean County College. Many of the students down here are already techs and they have first dibs on those jobs. They said it should be better in the fall. I decided to go north of the bridge and was hired in a new graduate position. But it had condition i had to pass my boards. And happily I just found out yesterday i did. Open houses may be way to go. Few of my classmates where hired that way. Good luck.
