No.California Kaiser canceling contracts

Published

In early October I had a contract canceled by Kaiser Oakland...Nursefinders, the Kaiser traveler middleman then tried to salvage something in the area for me. Found a position for me in the North Bay. Now this facility (and others?)canceled all (24) new travel assignments probably for the duration of the year, per regional direction. The economy seems to be an evermore widespread problem.:uhoh21:

update; Well it happened and I didn't know until I got to work.

Well my worse fear happened. I walked to work 1 mile in the dark only to be told to call my agency. I knew what that meant.

My recruiter forgot to check his email. Yes, I lost my contract. They said I made multiple errors. Not true, but I was told I was a target.

I was under so much stress with the threat that the last few days when I would go to work I would cry before starting. Iwas put through emotional torture.

Got home and finally got a hold of my recruiter. All he can say at the moment is we'll figuring something out.

I feel like I was put through an emotional hell. Maybe, things will work out for the best.

I'm really scared right now because I don't know what is going to happen. I don't know if I could put up with the anti traveler #@#@ much longer.

I wasn't perfect but I am human. I deserved to be treated better than this. It's not like me to mess up. I'm sure the stress didn't help.

I was the second traveler in one week that they did this to.

I hope I can find something soon.

This thread is definately interesting. I just had my first day orientation today at a Kaiser hospital. Within 10 minutes of getting there, we were given a rhythm analysis exam (fine by me), and literally told this will make or break us, and if we fail, we cant come back. They werent lying. I passed with no problems. 3 of the 5 nurses failed, and didnt come back. The nurses said they were told to go home. No remedial help offered. Luckily I still have my job, but I guess I know I need to be very carefull. Im wondering if this is a cheap cop out. Obviously you should know your basic rhythms, but not even an opportunity to redeem your self was offered. Just told to get the hell out essentially. I have never seen anything like it. They werent even nice about it.

I am a nurse here in Australia with 10 years experience....I took an assignment with Kaiser Oakland.....about 7 years ago now.....and I have never returned to nurse in the USA...hence my experience.

Please tell me that there are better hopitals than Kaiser?

Cheers

I have never been impressed with Kaiser. Seeing dozens of job listings on the EDD website for positions of less than 20 hrs per week and/or "on call-any shift, any department" was enough to tell me that there must be a reason for all these openings. That they consistently cancel travelers does not surprise me at all.

Stop beating yourself up! I am sure you are a very safe nurse! Look on the bright side - getting out of the kaiser system was your saving grace.

Forget them, you don't need to be abused and treated like that. Hold your head up high, you will not be beaten - patients need you. You have to get real with yourself - contact your agency and try another hospital and put this behind you, I know it sounds easier than it looks (it hasn't helped with an earlier comment I made) however, what doesn't break us, makes us stronger.

Don't worry over spilt milk, there are more people worst off than us in this world - give a thought for those who are facing life threatening diseases or the soldiers who are on duty facing the enemy.

Best of Luck

You will survive!

Update--my agency said Kaiser renewed call for travelers starting mid-December...I took a staff position in the East Bay, so thanks no thanks...giving traveling a rest for a while after all this...

Finished contract with Kaiser in Northern Cali in Sept, and had a contract at Kaiser SF at the beginning of Nov, but was canceled with a comforting 3 day notice :angryfire - Due to low cencus/economy from previous posts mentioned above. During all that down time, for over a month now, I have not been able to find pt, temp, per diem, or full time positions at any hospital in the Bay Area now, even though hospitals are advertising for RN positions. I went to a couple of job fairs. One at St. Francis and over 200 people showed up for an ICU position. Waited 3 1/2 hours for an interview. I can't find anything in this area. What is even more fustrating to me. Is that every hospital I come across have positions opened, but only if you are already employed by them. Its like some kind of nursing mafia going on.

I was at that St Francis job fair, too! There were tons of new grads, I noticed, and nowhere near as many experienced RNs. I thought having experience would've given me an edge (plus when I FINALLY got to speak with the tele manager, he seemed really interested in my resume), but so far, no phone call from them. I even left a msg for the manager a couple days after the fair but nada heard back.

Stanford is hiring. I actually got an interview in with the manager and think it went well. However, the way things are going, I don't want to get TOO confident that I'll get an actual job offer, although I am definitely hoping.

Final note- Kaiser Oakland is a nightmare.

Oh man, I'm so sorry this happened to you! I know what you mean about getting fed up with the anti traveler ()*)(*(. It is so demoralizing. I got canceled by a hospital once, and it really screwed me up emotionally for a while. It still makes me feel bad, but apparently, from what I've gathered from experienced travelers, it just comes with the territory sometimes. People think we travelers have it made, but they are a bit ignorant on the whole process. One of the reasons I'm looking for a staff job..

Good luck to you.. :redpinkhe

I worked an ER contract at Kaiser Walnut Creek and there was many a shift where the only people who weren't travelers were charge and the two triage nurses. While it was nice knowing that all of the people you were working with would help you out- it did become a little bit difficult to figure out some of their whacky protocols!
