NJCU ABSN 2020

Published

Hi everyone - I am considering applying for the Jersey City NJCU ABSN program starting in 2020. Has anyone submitted their application?

Hello everyone! I have been reading this thread and finally decided to create an account so I could participate ? I also applied to the Wall cohort. Anxiously awaiting a decision. This is the only program I have applied to because of prerequisites and proximity to home. I have three kids and all of the other programs seem to be an hour from home so I'm not sure if I could make it work otherwise.

@BigCheese Thanks! That was very helpful! It's definitely going to be a long 3 weeks. The countdown in my head to March 3rd is there now, whether I like it or not. ?

@chemgirl8312 Welcome! I also applied to Wall only! Sweating bullets here waiting as well lol.

Out of curiosity, does anyone have an idea the start date for the NJCU Wall campus?

@Fitzy31yes, right around Memorial Day. I believe the week before

Hey guys. Has anyone applied anywhere else? Rutgers is my backup which requires Organic Biochemistry or General Chemistry II. I’m currently enrolled in Chem II but it’s kind of a killer commute to Hudson County CC on Saturday mornings and Brookdale doesn’t offer Chem II on my schedule since I work full time... I was thinking of dropping Chem II at HCCC and wondering if anyone may have taken the Organic Biochem prerequisite at Brookdale? If so, anyone know the course code??? Thnx.

Hey guys! For anyone looking for other program options, Montclair just started a direct-entry MSN program for people with a non-nursing bachelor's degree. The program is 18 months and the requirements are almost the same. The prereqs are pretty similar to NJCU with the exception of Nutrition and Chemistry. Here's the link if you want to check it out: https://www.montclair.edu/nursing/pre-licensure-msn/

Wow! I live right by Montclair state. I’ve seen other direct entry MSN programs. Columbia has one. Do you know the benefit of getting your msn vs BSN??

So I looked into that MSN program and I suggest not even wasting your time to be honest. It is not an accredited program and when I spoke to someone there they could not even give me a straight answer as to when it would be accredited. I even called the NJ BON and asked if we could sit for the NCLEX at the end of a program that was not accredited and they said no. So I am just like, save yourself the trouble.

It annoyed me too because the program people could not give me a straight answer as to when they would become accredited. Also, they have another regular length BSN program that was just newly accredited within the past year or so. And for the MSN they were supposed to have a summer start but had to push it back to fall because people were not applying. If you're interested they said they want your applications as soon as possible. They also do not post the cost of the program. On their website, it says that the cost of the program can vary/change as well.

I was super excited about that program too because it seems like the entrance pay for someone with an MSN is higher than that of someone with a BSN. But that does not mean you can get a job faster since you still have to gain clinical experience before you can get an MSN job. And most MSN jobs just generally require a couple of years of bedside experience.

If anyone has had a better experience or learned something new about that MSN program being actually worth it please let us know! But it seemed really sketchy. I even signed up for their webinar which was supposed to start at 11 am on Feb 12, hoping to gain a bit more clarity and when I called in at 11:30 am the webinar had not even started. Then I logged in to see the final result of the presentation and there was no evidence of anyone having asked questions, they just said "oh someone in the chat asked this" and you could not see the chat and they only took 2-3 very generic questions.

I am sounding super negative about the whole program! So sorry. Do with the information I told you about what you will to come to your own conclusion. But I just want to make sure everyone knows so they don't waste their time and money.

@Tsal From what I know you have a wider range of job opportunities with an MSN as well as an increased salary compared to bsns depending on where you work. If you want to go into teaching or become a nurse midwife, most nursing schools look for MSNs.

@otgd8 thanks for the info! I wasn't planning on applying to the program but thought it might help someone. It's interesting that they're not even approved by the BON. You can sit for the NCLEX even if your school isn't accredited as long as it's approved or a candidate for accreditation (happened with my practical nursing program and I was able to take the NCLEX and get licensed with no problem). It definitely sounds shady after your experience

I'm in the exact same position as you ? But 2 kids instead of 3
