Nursing Students School Programs
Published Jan 15, 2020
Hi! I am applying to Nipissing's Scholar Practitioner Program for Fall 2020. I am really excited about it and would love to connect with other students who are in the same boat!
How is your application going?

@Mikkaura For sure, very tough! I work in a hospital in Toronto whose clinic collaborates with UHN so that's why I picked it ?
@TorNur Good luck ! ?

Hey guys, as we are preparing for the upcoming interviews I have started wondering which program I would want to go to if I got the choice (so far I only got into Queens) I applied to Western UofT and of course Nipissing! I think being able to work in the hospitals downtown is definitely an advantage but as a current UofT student I'm unsure whether I want to continue at UofT for nursing (if I get in) or if the more direct learning at Nipissing is something I would like to try (if I get in). I know UofT is the top nursing school in Canada but I would like to hear everyone else's reasons and opinions on choosing their preferences to give me more insight so I can start thinking about it ahead of time!
Wish you all the best!!

@Keke98: I applied to UofT, Humber, and Nipissing, as I want to stay in Toronto. Just a question: why don't you want to stay at UofT? Did you have a negative experience there? What did you study previously (before nursing)?
I previously studied at York, and I didn't apply to York on purpose. It's a great school in terms of profs and opportunities, but the strikes make it hard to finish your degree. Especially in nursing. The hospitals don't really care if your school is on strike, and that's what creates tension and stress.

Hi Nurse. I, I currently doing a double major in human biology and health studies at UofT
Personally, I find UofT to be harder for no reason other than the fact of keeping the name and status. For example, our profs need to make sure the average stays at certain percentage so if the class does too well on a midterm they make the final harder. I've had profs tell me that this is UofT no one gets perfect on papers here and it's true you can perfect the rubric for an assignment but still end up with an 80 instead of an 85 or higher. With that said, this is true for undergrad I heard that their nursing program is ran differently although it is more theory based but tbh I'm tired of writing essays and doing intense exams!?
I'd be interested to hear other people's opinions on UofT and if the nursing program is in fact different because I really would like a more hands on experience as opposed to heavily based in theory content

I have only applied to Nipissing. I really like how their program is set up and that they have such strong partnerships with TPH, UHN and Sick Kids. I think its a really unique program design and its more easily tailored to what you want to do within nursing. My undergrad was in public health which I studied at Waterloo and it's a field that is close to my heart and I would ultimately like to be very active in it as a nurse. Which is why I think being able to have my learning be in that setting is perfect with an organization like TPH is perfect for what I want to do. I think the focus on narrative inquiry and building cognitive apprenticeships is really unique and I think I will really enjoy that style of learning.

I didn't receive a confirmation when I replied to the email.
@TorNur I didn't get one back either.
Hi everyone, I was wondering where you're getting information on each of the placements? I know for the interview we should know a bit about each but I can't seem to find specific information from the program website

I have been reading through the learner handbook and the preceptor handbook (just to understand the kinds of things preceptors look for in us and how they are told to evaluate us).
I have also been reading all the past newsletters (https://www.nipissingu.ca/academics/faculty-education-and-professional-studies/nursing/scholar-practitioner-program-spp). They are actually a lot of fun to read and some students have shared their clinical experiences in it so you can get a glimpse into some placements.
I have also been reading articles about what is going on at the three placement locations, watching videos about services on the websites for UHN, SickKids and TPH. I am also reflecting on my values, skills and life experiences and how I could contribute to the work already happening at those places.
How are all of you preparing for the interview?
That's great advice!
I wrote my 3-min "speech" and just practicing it now. I'm also reading articles. Still need to find more resources about TPH, UHN, and SickKids.
