nicu travel nurse questions

Published

I will be starting my first travel nurse assignment. I was wondering how the orientation to the hospital/charting/policies usually goes.

What questions as a nicu travel nurse i should be asking on my first shifts.

I worked at a hospital that changed policies all the time in regards to blood transfusions, broviac dressing change, iv line changes, etc.

Any recommendations or am I getting too nervous for no reason.

You're getting too nervous for no reason. Relax, ask questions, you'll be fine.

Generally you will get hospital orientation, computer orientation, and some orientation to policies, or at least how to find them. Then you will get at least one day of clinical orientation. Most of your questions will be answered by that time, but if not, ask!

Questions to ask: when do i get to take my lunch break :)

but seriously: is the md/np in house 24 hrs?, is RT available?, where do float?, what are the nurse to pt ratio?, how often are fluids changed?, visitation policy, etc...

You should really get most of these answered before you start during the interview process. Just go in with a good attitude and don't look scared!
