why don't you come to ca? get away from that cold in weather! they are tons of travel opportunities here & you will be pleasantly surprised by the pay. plus you will receive either housing for free or a tax free rent allowance usually around 1200-1800/mo depending on where the contract is. the only negative...you will be expected to float first in many facilities.

I had a great time at Denver Children's NICU. Nice staff, lots of travelers. Good ratios. Interesting pts.
Valley Presbyterian in Van Nuys California: Nice staff, wouldn't go there again. Staffing was bad, lots of floating. This was a couple years ago, it may have improved.
Kapiolani in Honolulu: Wonderful staff. Interesting kids from all over the Pacific. Floating required. Ratios ok. Union, so the overtime was sweet.
Sunrise Las Vegas: Only if you feel like gambling (with your license!). This was over 10 years ago, maybe its improved.

Almost all agencies offer rent allowances for those who do not take their housing. As far as staying in one area, if you mean being a traveler within your home town, it has certainly been done, but many hospitals are becoming wise to this and stipulating that only nurses outside a certain radius (usually 50 or 100 miles) can take a travel position there. This is because they want the locals in their pool rather than having to pay a travel company for them.
