Talk to Citizens Advice. They may be more able to help you (for free) and point you in the right direction. Also have a word with your union if you are a member. Does your trust have someone in HR who can help and advise? If you don't ask you don't get.

Was it done through an agency? I have my RGN which was so expensive and such a headache to get that I am not even paying the fees anymore for renewal. I was placed by an agency at John Radcliffe in Oxford and I got out. I came up with a design for heavy patient's legs for the community nurses for the Innovation Center and when I tried to patent it, the trust wouldn't let me. Said it was theirs because I was working for them at the time. I scarpered in a hurry. Ungrateful plonkers!
You might have to worry about a work permit etc, because they tried to threaten me with it, forgetting that I am a British citizen.

No I'm an American but my parents are British and Danish so I have all three passports. I feel British even though I grew up in America because my parents are still very very British and that's the main culture I grew up with.
Stick it out because Britain is the best country in the world in my opinion. I can't quite put my finger on it but I think it's the NHS actually that just makes the entire country seem like a large village. I've traveled extensively and the UK just suits my personality. The quirkiness of the place strikes exactly the right blend.
Good luck!
Wow I'm speechless ?! Thanks

Not to start another squabble but if you were being paid during the development,

the patent belongs to the Company paying you.

The NHS is not a company and they are right, however I was part of a team even though it was my idea originally. It's just their abrupt dismissal without discussion of possibilities. It took a lot of time working out the design, convincing the innovation Dept and putting together a team all on my time and hours without compensation.
My girlfriend at the time was a community nurse and frequently complained about the weight of patient's legs for dressings etc. So I modified an existing design by replacing the platform and used a telescoping leg instead of the worm drive which took too long to get to the required height and created a stable base for support. It worked well.
Then you have to deal with politics. Health and Safety. EU materials list and testing etc etc even though all materials used were existing materials being used in a new design. The trust was very patronizing, staffed by officious bubble heads who had no background in design or innovation. Just stuffed shirts.
Was a great experience though.
