Newman University DNAP CRNA 2024

Published

Good luck to everyone applying to Newman University's DNAP 2024 cohort! In the words of CRNA Jon Lowrance (Anesthesia Guidebook podcast), competition among applicants ends once CRNA school begins. To help cultivate this mindset, this forum is for applicants to share tips and pearls they've found along the way for preparing for the highly anticipated interview!

I'm reading "Thinking, Fast and Slow," "Make it Stick, the Science of Successful Learning," and "Costanzo's Physiology" to prep! Podcasts like "Anesthesia Guidebook," "Core Anesthesia," and "ACCRAC" have been helpful in giving me an idea of what to expect for both the interview and understanding the stress of CRNA school!

What have you found helpful? What pitfalls do you anticipate? What did you most enjoy from your shadowing experience?

Does anyone know if they are still inviting or if I am just waiting on a rejection email at this point?

They are still processing applications; their assistant director leaving left them very short handed. Don't give up hope yet!

I was 100% just waiting on a no-interview email. Thank you for giving me a glimmer of hope.

When did they leave?

I think two or three weeks ago. It was an "effective immediately" kind of situation. BrittG probably has more insight into that situation. Lots of compounding factors at play both within and outside NewmanU are also influencing the delay. We'll see what happens as the dust settles but currently there's a big question mark for a lot of us.

Wow that's crazy. I knew that they had some staff rearranging last year but had no idea about that. Was their head director at Tulsa previously?

I'm not 100% sure. Here's their "meet the faculty" page - I don't see any past academic positions listed ?‍♂️

Yes she was at Tulsa previously. And as CamillusRN stated, the assistant director left 2 weeks ago. Our clinical director is sitting in as interim at the moment.

I've heard good things about her!

In your interview you may be asked what being a CRNA means to you. If you shadowed a CRNA or know a CRNA, you have a fairly good idea about what a CRNA does within the operating room. What about outside the operating room? The CRNA profession is full of people who take leadership and advocacy to the next level outside the OR, not just for patients but for the profession and the good of their communities.

So, what does being a CRNA mean to you?

One of the blessings of working with an anesthesiology group for the past couple of years is watching the passion many CRNAs and physician anesthesiologists have for mentoring future anesthesia professionals. What impact have mentors had on your passion for anesthesia? How do/will you approach mentoring others?
