Nurses New Nurse

Published

hi fellow RNs, just passed my nclex last yr 2014 march and by the way i'm from Hawaii. Right after i pass my nclex-rn exam, i was so eager to look for a job (Hospital job if possible) but amongst all the applications i sent, all i got is rejection letters, not to mention even with CNA and tech for that matter, can't blame i'm a newbie and the job market here is undeniably tough, so yeah as fallback, i did applied at SNF/LTC. Month and a half later i got a callback and got hired to a nearby Nursing&Rehab here in my area and to cut it short been working there for almost 8 months now. tho it's not i really wanted i took the offer, well instead of sitting around. but right now, i'm on the verge of i feel lazy sometimes going at work, and i'm kinda starting to hate the routinary job, i felt like of a less of a nurse, but don't get me wrong with that, it was a good start for me, i learned a lot since i'm also a foreign graduate BSN-RN, but i just don't find myself to be working in a facility, i felt like i aint gonna grow as a nurse i wanted to be since the knowledge you apply is somewhat limited. I haven't tried submitting resumes since i got this job, some told me this experience i have won't give me any bearing to land a job in the hospital since it's not counted as acute experience (tho our facility does cater few days post-op and others.). Now i'm also caught in between if will i go search out of state jobs, or try to apply again to any of the hospitals here which includes CNA/clerk/tech just to get my foot in the door. Any suggestions?? :) BIG MAHALO fellow RNs! HAPPY NEW YEAR TO US!!

Experience is experience

I work for 11 months in a SNF/LTC, 4 yrs later I am working in an ER.

Keep applying, one company I applied to over 200 positions before I got hired, turn your job hunt into a job and eventually someone will bite

I would stay for at least 12months if possible and in the meantime research other jobs.

I would keep applying, there's no reason to stay a full year if you can get an offer before the year is up. Many jobs (but not all jobs) in hospitals require a year of experience, so be prepared to stay another 4 months if you have to, but you may not have to.

Yeah I agree with the other posters, stay there for a whole year at least. However, I do know that the Hawaii job market is horrible. It really depends on your personal circumstances. Do you have anything thats preventing you from relocating or do you have the flexibility to utilize the whole USA as your playground for job hunting? Getting a hospital job in Hawaii with SNF experience is extremely slim, but if your applying across the USA with at least 1 year of SNF experience then your chances are significantly higher.
