Hey random strangers on the internet here, I am a current student at NYU in the school of nursing. I just wanted to drop in here and give people a heads up about something that is going on lately with the clinical sites at NYU that they probably would not tell you if you were enrolling for Fall/and if I were dealing with it like people are now, I would wish someone warned me! So, lots of students are being sent out to Long Island 2 hours+ from the city in Mineola for their clinicals lately and since you have no choice in the matter of where you get placed, they aren't letting anyone change sites even if they can't get out there really early in the morning. It's pretty bad, and I know some people including me, looked for nursing schools where they can count on getting clinical placements in the city itself when deciding where they will go for nursing school. so just be aware that they are also seemingly phasing out many of the big hospitals like Sinai, NY Health and Hospitals, Northwell, in favor of the NYU hospital system - in itself, that isn't a big deal but they now seem to be placing a TON of people out on Long Island or in Brooklyn at their smaller hospital there where (from what I hear) support and immersion in the clinical environment does not come easily. I am thankful that I was lucky enough to escape this fate of being sent out to Long Island but many people I know from school are dealing with it and I feel seriously bad for everybody who is. So moral of the story, I just would recommend keeping this in mind and even asking about it ahead of time to admissions people if it's something that's a deal breaker for you. I think NYU's nursing program is mostly fine but the price is VERY high to get sent out of the city, and I just hope it doesn't happen to me next semester. Good luck everyone and congrats on getting in, and I hope wherever you end up you make it to RN status soon!

We should all make note to ask about this during the admitted students meeting. Thanks so much for your insight. Are you an accelerated student?

hi! Thank you so much for this insight. Do you know exactly when people are getting sent out to Mineola? Is it the beginning of the program, or more like the last semester? I’m just having a hard time because I live on Long Island right now, and plans on getting an apartment to not deal with the commute to Nyu every day. But if I’m going to be placed in Mineola, it almost makes sense for me to stay at home and not commute.

Hey no problem! It's a big issue across all semesters now and seems to be happening more each semester. It happens to people at the start and end equally I think but seems to just be getting worse quickly. The issue like you said for a lot of people is that they too moved here from Long Island only to be sent back for clinical... and that is really not good and would not be fair for you

I would definitely bring it up at the admitted student meeting! NYU advertises their clinical sites being top manhattan hospitals and *some* are, don't get me wrong, but a lot aren't anymore. It doesn't seem like it's going to matter until it starts happening to people I know and now it seems inescapable unless you're insanely lucky to not get put in sunset park or long island. I would just advise you to see what they say about the possibility of being sent there because they have been sending some really rude replies to people who are frustrated with what is going on. For the tuition most people pay, I'm super disappointed in NYU and feel gross about it knowing what my friends are going through now.

If you don’t mind sharing how is the course load , what is the environment like & how are the professors?

If you’re going to spend this kind of money…. Go to a entry MSN program. NYU needs to get with the times. For what they are charging. I’m an NYU alumni grad. There’s a lot of financial politics at that school…and those politics will/and directly dictate why they don’t even have an MSN entry program in the first place.  Have y’all ever wondered why every student from the threads states “there’s financial aid opportunity in the second semester”. There’s a big reason for that and that’s why the school it not even top 10…. For that price. I’m sorry. I’m I mean give me a break. It’s ridiculous.

I haven't got my acceptance yet but got an acceptance from Mercy, which is half the price. NYU was my top choice but after thinking about it, the price is just not worth it. I have some debt from undergrad and I do not want to add much more to that. I appreciate your guys' input on this.

???????????? NYU wise up and make

an MSN program and stop being under-funded and antiquated

I got accepted to both NYU and Mercy and chose NYU. I am unable to move uptown and the commute from the lower east side would be too much for me to still be able to maintain a good work life balance. But totally understand that. Hoping to apply to scholarships and not be super in debt ✌?

Can you elaborate? I'm not sure what you mean regarding politics and scholarships/not having an MSN program

Hi everyone! Congrats to everyone that got accepted, and good luck to everyone still waiting! I just got my acceptance the other day, and I was wondering if anyone knew if the the school was open to tour? I wouldn't mind just walking around it myself and not doing an official tour, I would just like to be able to see the building. Thanks in advance!

hey! I got an email notification from this thread and saw the recent comments. I debated posting this but I feel like it would eat away at me unless I did: I am one of the many people who was sent to long island for clinical. You don't think it's gonna happen to you but then they send you there. And the school is treating a lot of us very rudely with regard to that. I had no choice in where I would end up at all - even if you say you can't physically go to Long Island at 6 am (trains don't run from certain areas, and it takes hours), they still put you out on LI and say "not my problem".

From what we noticed (and the other commenter mentioned) it's apparent they are assigning a lot of people to the hospital in out there compared to years past. I would wager that it's because of lack of clinical space in the city, but A.) that should not be a burden that falls on the students who pay a great deal to go their nursing school in the city and do clinicals in the actual city, and B.) I would not have chosen this program if I had know this was going to happen, since where you complete clinical can help you get a foot in the door for jobs on units or at certain hospitals, and now I am stuck going out to a hospital I'd never be able to work at after graduating. Plus the commute all the way there is 3 hours at least by train if you live in NJ.

Compare that with other schools in NYC: they only place you in the city, and they also give you some say in where you wanna do clinicals. Not NYU. And I want to stress again that the way they speak to you when you ask for help is (for lack of better words) uncaring and callous. I haven't experienced it until something went wrong; their tune totally changes once the money is paid. I hate to say it but I just feel like a number to them. They have outright ignored many people and shown us how they really feel about enrolled students.

So to sum this up - I was happy enough with the program for a bit, and while I still feel that I got some good experiences, realizing I would have no senior capstone was a big blow, as was being placed away from the NYC area, and then the way they treated me when I tried to resolve the clinical issue has been so disheartening. Like many of you here I care so much about nursing and learning, and felt like NYU would be an awesome choice to launch me into the career with supportive personnel to guide me. The professors have been decent, but the administration and lack of options for clinical training has absolutely ruined it for me.

For those of you considering moving to NYC or choosing this program b/c of its clinical sites, I would just be aware of all of this. Is it a fair program to get a BSN? Sure, and I know that my professors care about students, which is nice. But oh my goodness, the price and the lack of clinicals are a huge deal breaker for a supposedly high caliber BSN program. I would NOT choose the school again if I had the option to go back in time. It bums me out to see that now. I would just warn you to save yourself the trouble and pick a cheaper school if you're accepted to another decent place. But on the flipside, if you don't care about the lack of a capstone, half as many clinical hours, or being put hours away for your clinical, then it cold be fine for you. It's your call. Just in mind, they offer half as many clinicals as other schools, there is no senior capstone at all- ask about this, because it's a major issue for those of us finishing and trying to get jobs that requite a capstone.

Oh and one last piece of advice too: I would ask directly about anything before paying full tuition if you're on the fence or wanna be sure because they should be accountable for being transparent. They kind of obscure the facts in admissions sessions. We really spend too much on a NYC program to be put outside of the metro area. Just my two cents - honestly, best wishes to everyone waiting on answers or who already got in, and if you committed here, you'll still get a BSN. you are gonna do great no matter where you go. But I can't not tell you guys this stuff because it just isn't cool.

I have a few questions if you don't mind answering!

How is the retention as in are there a lot of people that drop out of the program,  I wasn't able to find that information anywhere?

How are the courses, exams , and professors?
