New York Presbyterian new grad problems!

U.S.A. New York

Hey everyone! I was wondering since so many people on here have been through or are currently going through the new grad process at nyp if anyone could help me out. I went to the invite only new grad meet and greet in July and since then was told the NICU would be interested in bringing me in for an interview. I did end up going for an interview but never heard anything back. I am pretty convinced I did not get it but has anyone else just been left out in the cold after an interview?? I don't know what steps to take next! Plus if they were the only department interested in me and didn't hire me should I even continue looking there? Any advice would be so helpful! I am getting very desperate and I currently work there now as a CNA so I am very torn!

At lest you got an interview! I haven't heard anything since the invite only meet and greet. Did you send a thank you email to the person who interviewed you? If it's been a little bit and you have their email you can always follow up saying something like you wanted to let them know you are still very interested in working in their unit and you hope they will keep you in mind if anything becomes available. If you've gotten any certs or any other changes in your status (passed nclex, acls, etc) you could also give them an update.

Good luck!

Klr15, NYP takes awhile because they have a lot of applicants and more than just new grad positions to fill. I would say keep your options open ...apply to other facilities while waiting to hear back. You dont want to just rely on NYP incase things do not work out. I applied to a position recently however the recruiter called back and stated that the department is looking for someone with experience in that specific department however she will consider me for positions in my department of experience. Let's see how it goes.

As for being left out in the cold after an interview, do not take it personal ...it happens to everyone ...new grads and experienced. I have experience and i had an interview last month and it went great however i never heard back from that hospital (not NYP). The person that the manager interviewed after me had 3 years more of specific experience in that area of nursing than I did so i guess thats what happened. I have experience in that area but not in that specific department. So oh well, everything for a reason.

Thank you both for the advice! Goveg I sent a thank you email that day actually because the hiring manager requested to see some of my reports I had done from my previous time in the NICU during school and said she was interested in reading them. I was thinking of sending a follow up email as you suggested but since she never responded to my previous one I thought it might seem like too much. I am actually surprised you haven't heard anything back it is very frustrating but keep your head up! Keep us all updated on you adventure as well!

estrellaCR, thank you for your story. It is a shame when these hospitals dont respond back because it seems very unprofessional to me. I will definitely continue to apply to other facilities, I assumed after working for two years at NYP my journey to a full time RN position wouldnt be this much of a struggle. Also since you are experienced if you have any advice when it comes to doing well in interviews or improving resumes please let me know. I would love to hear how you got your start! and like you said everything for a reason! Good Luck!

Klr, have u tried medsurg at NYP? Or you are not interested in medsurg? You would likely have more luck in medsurg as they more frequently hire new grads into medsurg. You mention you already work at NYP...its strange you have not been upgraded to RN. Maybe email the CNO and mention you are waiting for an upgrade. NICU i heard they only hire if you have RN experience as its a specialized unit but Pediatrics or Medsurg or other more general medicine departments would be open to new grads. Let the CNO and floor managers know that you are interested in other departments (if you are) more fitting for a new grad.

I get my current job by applying online on the nyc hhc website and i then got called for interview. I did not know anyone at HHC or anywhere else. I had certifications and related volunteer experience as well as my previous job being related to healthcare. I sent thank you card after interview. I did not do anything different at this interview than at the ones before. I think i just fit the unit they were hiring for. You can try HHC, they have lots of postings at all their hospitals. Montefiore is also open to new grads, email to the recruiter.
