New York Presbyterian BSN only?

Published

Hi everyone,

Does anyone know if NYP only hires BSN. I've been searching the boards and have 3 different answers:

1. BSN is preferred but ADNs can still be hired.

2. if you are an ADN enrolled in a BSN program you are eligible.

3. they will not hire you no matter what if you don't have a BSN even if they Nursing manager wants you, HR will not allow it.

Does anyone have a definite answer. I know their website says BSN preferred, but often with hospitals preferred means only. I have attempted to contact HR with this question, but have not heard back. Thanks for any help anyone could give me.

Just an update on myself. I was able to get an in-person interview last week Monday (June 20th) and was offered a position the next day. I am sooo happy :lol2:

Also NYP IS leaning towards BSN only. I will be finished with my BSN this August and will officially start in L&D in September (of course with passing their pharm test first which I'm doing in August).

WOO-HOO!! Way to go - congrats on the new job!!:yeah:

Thank you!!! ;)

Congrat, Ebony RN....LnD....that's great.

OP,most hospitals are leaning towards BSN now so I guess the best bet is to get it!

I have a phone screen interview with them for the BSN students Assistant part time. I have ADN but enrolled in BSN. Do you have any idea on what they are looking for. What should i expect. Thanks for any advice.

It largely depends upon which hospital within NYP you apply to.

For instance, if you apply to Columbia Presbyterian (Uptown Manhattan) with only an associates, you could get hired if you do well with the interview.

On the other hand, if you apply to Cornell Presbyterian (Upper East Side) with only an associates, they will simply reject you (Unless they have extreme circumstances playing a role).

Why this works this way is simple.

Cornell Presbyterian, on the east side, is their flagship hospital if you will. Where as Columbia Presbyterian is more of their dreaded step-sister hospital that they don't keep as close of an eye on, so they tend to have practices that are a little more lenient.

As a whole, NYP does not want ADN nurses on their staff, unless they have already worked there for some time and are just being grandfather'ed in.

The hospital is ranked #1 in NY state and #6 in the nation. They only want the most experienced nurses on staff with the highest academic accolades.

While I do believe that an ADN nurse, can at times, produce the same, if not better, work than that of a BSN nurse, this is not always the case. More and more, the lack of higher education has become taxing on these hospitals by way of overall patient feedback.

Hi Godsfavor. I am just seeing you your post. Did you have your phone interview yet?

And an update on me. I took and passed my pharmacology exam 2 days ago. It was definitely a hard test, not difficult but I would say it would be an easier test for a new grad or someone just recently taking the NECLEX, but definitely doable.

I start Orientation the first week of September.

I don't think you could be further from the truth on this one. Are there differences between the two campuses? Absolutely. But in no way could you say Columbia is a "dreaded step-sister." During my career I have worked at both Cornell and Columbia and I think you will find both campuses to have the same idea when it comes to nursing practice. The whole "We put patients first" thing isn't some random vision that the marketing department invented and isn't carried through - you see it across all NYP campuses and the nurses really live by it. I had amazing co-workers at both campuses when I worked there (I wouldn't have left if I didn't just move!). There is also one CNO for the whole organization, and she oversees all the campuses - ****** is a great leader and is really involved.

Congrats to all who recently got a job at NYP, and good luck to the rest of you... I hope you have as great of an experience as I did!

I had the phone interview last week, the person that interviewed me told me that she will forward the information to the HR department. I got an email from them saying that they maintain interest in my candidacy, and will inform me once decision is made.

I'll definitely keep my fingers cross for you. I think it took a little over 2 weeks before someone got back to me when they decided they wanted to see me in person.

Good luck to you!!

Thanks. The position is for BSN student Assistant part time, i have my RN license but also enrolled in BSN. What is the starting salary for their RN position, Do you know anything about their BSN student Assistant position and how much they pay. I got offer for home care, and also flu shot part time from september to December. So any idea about their BSN student Assistant part time will help me to make decision.

I honestly am not familiar with the position you applied for. But starting salary for staff RN's is:

$73,757 for

$75,229 for >1yr experience

They add $1300 once you get your BSN and

$6,000 shift differential for 4pm-7am

I hope this helps a little bit :clown:
