CUNY: City Tech or Medgar Evers

U.S.A. New York

Im currently applying right now to start my pre-req over the summer. So far City Tech seems to have easier pre-req requirements (its only A&P1, math, eng, & psych) plus the Kaplan entrance exam. I want to try and get these done over the summer so that I can apply for Spring 2014.

Anyone currently enrolled in either off these schools? Im currently leaning towards City Tech because of the easier requirements but also because Medgar Evers only starts their nursing programs during the fall.

But on the other hand Medgar Evers is literally 5 blocks from my house, walking distance. (city tech is close by also but its 15/20 minutes by subway) I dont know which one to do.

Part of me wants to edit my CUNY application to only City Tech because if I apply to both I may only get into one and then I HAVE to go there (because you are required to already have completed a semester BEFORE even applying)

What are the pre_reqs in MEC? I have no idea what classes you have to take inorder to get in.

I got into the program. I start Fall 2013 at City Tech, for the Associates Nursing. They look at 4 Pre reqs. : Intro to Psych, A&P 1, English 101, and Math 1275 (college level math). You have to also take the TEAS V exam, which has four sections , Math, reading, science, and english. My gpa for the 4 pre reqs were about a 3.8. and I passed each section of the Teas Exam with grades that were good enough to get into the program. They def pay attention to the prereqs so do good on those firstly.

Are you in the nursing program at MEC?

Are U in the program?

I am currently in Medgar Evers but would like to apply to more than one CUNY, I was looking at City Tech but they require you to be enrolled for a semester before applying, is it worth transferring for the Spring to try and get into their Fall 16 ASN program? Just wondering how to apply to more than one school since most require you to be an active student there. Any help would be appreciated!

I don't think you can, for CUNY you have to be a fulltime student to apply to each school's respective nursing program. I remember when I was applying to to MEC's nursing program some of my friends applied to private nursing schools as a backup but I can't recall anyone that manage to have another CUNY school as backup. All the CUNY nursing programs are the same in that they cover the same curriculum and do clinicals at the same hospitals so if you're undecided where you want to apply consider things such as the commute and class times (MEC's nursing classes are scheduled between evenings and nights).

Thanks so much! Yes it seems like that's what I'll have to do! Can you tell me more about MECs program if you enjoyed it, how the NLN was, what scores and GPA did they accept? Thanks so much!!

Well I don't have too much data to be able to compare MEC's program to others but I like it so far other than the fact that it's stressful but that seems to be the norm no matter what nursing school you go to. Something that I like about cuny's nursing programs as a whole is that you get more hands on clinical experience compared to the private schools. The class age seems to skew a little older compared to other nursing programs but I find it helpful since a lot of my classmates are second career students who already work in the healthcare field so I'm able to learn from their experiences. I really don't know what they look for in terms of grades or nln scores but just make sure you do well on your pre-reqs and the nln. If you haven't purchased an nln review book I suggest you do because a good chunk of the people are knocked out of the running because they get mediocre scores on it. As I said the nursing previously, classes are scheduled during the evening-night hours and the clinicals are on the weekend so if you're comparing cuny nursing programs you should keep that in mind.

Thanks so much for answering I'm applying there for the Fall and working really hard on the NLN I hear there is a lot of physics on the science section if you don't mind sharing what your GPA and NLN score was so I can see if I have a shot lol!
