New York City Job Market and Experience

Published

Hello, I'm a high school student from Missouri. My DREAM is to move to New York City to become a RN with my BSN. Right now I'm taking as many high school classes that would benefit me and trying my hardest. I've always wanted to be a nurse. I've also heard the nursing field is really competitive. My plan is to go to college in Kansas City so I'm not Paying a ton for out of state tuition. Once I graduate I plan to work in KC still for a couple of years for experience. Hopefully by then it will be enough to move to NYC. But I've heard that being hired by a hospital is really tough in the city. Is there anything I can do to help my case for my future? Is this a good plan? Should I follow through or not get my hopes up too high because this dream is too far fetched? Any help at all would be appreciated! (P.S. I know I'm really young, I just want to know if this is a good future.)

Sounds like you're off to a great start, not many your age are so determined and looking into the future. Yes, the job market is tough here; I've been a RN for a little over a year (associates degree in nursing, BS in textile chem) and this fall I will start an online rn-bsn program. I haven't been able to get into a hospital thus far despite many, many applications. That being said you still have a few years to go and a lot can change by then. I would recommend staying where you are and completing your BSN and depending on the job market getting some acute care experience there before coming to NY. When the time comes you will be able to judge the job markets both at home and in NYC and make the best decision for yourself. I would recommend volunteering at hospitals, maintaining good relationships with professors and clinical preceptors and doing your best to attract the attention of nurse managers in your clinical sites as these will all help you to find a job later on. best of luck!!

Oh my gosh, that helped a ton!! Thank you so much!!

Hey there-

I think its terrific that you have a goal and you are working really hard to achieve it! And nursing is a great goal...Your plan sounds nice and sound and I would definitely go for the BSN right away. It is hard to go back to school once you have already graduated (good for you RNbean :)) If you were graduating now or in the next few years I would say that sounds really good because it is really difficult for a new grad to get a job in NYC but check out the job opportunities in NYC later on...say when you are a college junior or senior and see how many postings are for new grads. You may be able to move here sooner than you think! The market always changes.

Good luck to you and I look forward to working with you as an RN in NY!

Thanks for reassuring! I was hoping my plans wouldn't have any flaws, just needed a look at it from actual nurses!! :D I REALLY appreciate the feedback!!

Specializes in They know this too!.

I started doing travel/per diem in a couple of places in NYC. I tried applying directly, but would never get a response. It also helped me figure out which place I did want to work at and which ones I didn't.

I have experience with an Associates Degree.

Where else have you worked that you enjoy? Do you also enjoy working on the city?

I liked Phoenix, AZ to me it is very laid back.

I do enjoy the city. I am just not into the country lifestyle at this point in my life.
