New user, just want to say hello, and intro myself.

Hello to all,

I'm 35, married, 2 girls ages 3 & 11, live on a farm in Ga. Right now i'm in school going for LPN. Iv'e taken core classes and fundamental's. I wanted to be a nurse when I was 15, but made some wrong choices and never did. So now I feel settled, mature, and ready. Last year I started at a local college going for RN, I had to withdraw because the general college classes were just to hard. So I'm thinking maybe if I get my LPN first, then go straight into the RN I can do better (any advice or encouragement would be great here). The LPN program starts in September, I will have to go through an interview before being accepted (more advice please). Anyway's I've made A's & B's in everything. ex: A & P, Psy. Healthcare, etc. All but math I made a C, iv'e never been good at math and that scares me, because I really want to be an RN, and I know the math will get harder. What if I do great in everything, but can't pass math, will I ever get to be an RN? (more advise, please). Iv'e been reading some of these post for about a month now, and ya'll sound wonderful, I believe you will all be an asset to my educational goals, maybe even a shoulder to cry on sometimes. Ok, sorry so long, but just looking for a friend or some encouragment. Thank You so much, and God Bless you all.

Don't worry about the math. If you have problems, the school should provide you with a tutor, or at least help you find one. Nursing isn't all brains and book knowledge. Being knowledgable is important, but what's in your heart is even more so. If you have compassion and a true desire to help others, you will make it. Of course you need a strong back, thick skin, and the ability to smile when you want to scream also.

Math bites..... we must be twins........... I hate math because I do not get it!!!!! I have been an lpn and I am finally back to school to get my bsn in nursing.... I kept putting it off..... There will nver be a good time to do college since you have family and work babies, bills, and etc..... So you just have to go for it. i recommend a lpn to Bsn transition program that way you can have a 4 yr degree in lesstime than it would take to go full time. you get credit for your lpn experience...... check it out!!!!!!

Welcome to the board! So glad to meet you. DO NOT LET MATH be the OBSTACLE that stops ya from becoming an RN. YOU CAN DO IT! I hate math, too. Go for it! we NEED you!

Welcome, I'm fairly new here also. great place to get advice and feedback. I was never good in math, but with a tutor I did well. Seek out the help you need and you will get it. Good Luck to you.

I think you will find the math becomes easier once you are working with it every day, and able to relate it to concrete examples. I also went the route (many years ago) of LPN to RN, and found that working with it really helped my comprehension. When (if) you find yourself with downtime at work, ask your co-workers questions. You may find yourself a mentor. And there are always plenty of great resources here!

Hiya and huggsssssssss!!! I am sure you will do great. I also went to school when I was in my 30's with 2 small kids. I think you will do alright. And here's what my sis in law told me about math and meds..UNIT DOSES.. and BLISTER PACKS!!! She did give me a review book she used ....was just basic math. I love calculators!!! I think once you get the LPN under your belt, it'll give you the ocnfidence to go get your RN. I kinda like being an LPN, so I am staying here. But I just wanted to say hi to you and let you know there's a lot of support and help here if you need it!!! Laura LPN

Reminds me of a story:

Freebird was my hubby's favorite song, especially the long version, when we met. The tape got "eaten" in a tape machine a couple weeks before we got married. Hubby said it was "a sign," and never bought another to replace it. (That was 13 years ago!)

PS Nursing reality time: I never do a math calculation without double-checking it with the pharmacy or another nurse.
