New US citizen wanting to study nursing

Published

Hi all,

I'm needing some advise as i seem to be going round in circles looking online. I'm engaged to an American and due to move out to Ky next year to marry and start a life there. When i'm settled i want to study nursing and become a registered nurse preferably in mental health. Can people please advise me on what entry requirements would be needed and how flexible the colleges are? Currently i'm working in a residential setting with disabilities, admistering medication and care giving. The only actual qualifications i have in health is an NVQ 2 in health and social care...thats high school inequivalent. I'm also studying two science courses with the open university at university level 1. I have already emailed a college in Ky but all the did was enclose a brochure of which i'd already read through and found no help!!

Any information would be much appreciated

Are you a US Citizen now?

If not, I will be glad to move this to the International Nurses Forum as you might get more info there.

You will not be a US citizen until you have been married for over 3 years and you apply to be a US citizen. Your NVQ I doubt will mean much in the US although you may be able to get your coursework evaluated to see if it equates to anything similar in the US.

A lot will depend on which state you are looking to living in once you marry your fiancée as each state and even each school will have their own pre requisites that are required

I am going to move this to the International forum however you may want to check out the state nursing program discussion forum as well as the pre student forum

Entry requirements vary by school and it's hard to tell what will transfer, especially if the classes are non-US. You really have to talk to an admissions counselor at each school you are considering.
