new traveller, help!

Published

I'm a first time traveller as well and I have to say, it's a bit overwhelming! I feel bad talking with a few different companies at once, but it just feels like they're trying to fit me where THEY need me. they ask me what i want and then come up with the exact opposite and try and convince that's what's best...is this normal?

also, is it ok to submit apps to a few different companies and then just go with whoever places me where I want to be? I feel a bit bad having them do all the work and then having to wind up saying sorry to the ones missing out, but i don't know if that's just how it all works.

how long should i hold out for my ideal position before just going with second or third best offer?? would appreciate any input! thanks :)

That is exactly how it all works, expecially when you are a new traveler. Congratulations by the way!! If you are the type of person that likes new experiences and currently doesn't mind floating to other areas, you will love it!!

Yes you should be contacting more than one travel company and they should know it. That way you know what the industry is offering and they can give you better rates and what you want.

You will be the one working your assignment and not enjoying it if you go with something you don't want. They get paid regardless. If they know you are new they will try and stick you in jobs no one else wants and there are reasons for that.

Stick to your guns. How long should you wait is up to your situation. Do you have a job now? Money saved up to take a few weeks off?

If you are coming to the western states shoot me an email and I can direct you to a company that pays well and will get you what you want if it is available.

Hope that helps.

Now that is true:scrying: They are not lying about post partem/mother baby jobs being non-existant. My wife is a pp/mb nurse of 7 years and it was next to impossible to land a travel job.

We would submit to multiple positions all over and would not get a return call. Luckily our recruiter is awesome and we asked why she wasn't getting anything. The hospitals were hiring nurses with 10+ year of experience who had been applying multiple times:crying2:

About the only time to get one of these positions is the summertime when people go on vacation.

Hi:

I'll validate that! I'm one of those OB nurses with 20 years experience and even I am seeing few PP or MB positions. (I do all areas but like to switch off between Ante, L&D, PP, MB to keep my skills up.). If your wife does any labor at all, her best bet may be small facilities that combine L&D and PP on one unit.

I have never been to Hawaii but I havn't heard of people having problems. California can be tough to get jobs in certain fields. shouldn't have a problem with ms/tele though.

You can pm others after 15 posts on the boards:wink2:

I made the mistake of taking a position because i wanted the area and wanted it "badly" They knew I was only working with them. I was miserable. It was a new, trial unit and it was unsafe. I eventually got sent ho me because I lost my temper and stood up for patient safety. I came home to work but I miss travel badly. I am going back, but working the agency that will giveme what I want. Jeremy, could you contact me off list?

I hope to start traveling in the next couple of weeks. Thought I had narrowed my choice down, but then found out that their job list was limited to 3 areas CA, OH and TX. Money was great but I want to stay closer hope this first time out. I am talking with AMN, RNNetwork, Acess and Travel Nurses across America. Any recommendations or thoughts would really help me out. I feel so out of my comfort zone.

Hi neurorn6,

At first, I too wanted to stay in the South - close to my friends and family. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to get an assignment in the South. There are multiple reasons why - one of which being budgetary issues. The pay rates in general are lower, and the poverty rates in most Southern areas are higher. Therefore, many hospitals have fewer resources to pay for travelers. California has several travel positions because of the mandated patient:nurse ratios. Therefore, they have no choice but to hire the travel nurses to help meet the ratios which are a part of state law. While picking up and travelling from the South out to California is scary and daunting, it is the best place to get your feet wet while travelling. After time, maybe a position might open up closer to your home. You never know. Just be wary that it is difficult to get jobs in some of the Southern states. So, don't be afraid to broaden your search radius.

Thanks for your imput. I'm mainly looking closer to home this time for my family. I want to let them get used to me being gone. Thought that this might be the best way. I hope to get back to the Jersey Shore and back out to Colorado eventually. Anyway, thanks again for your help.
