New Travel Nurse Question

I am considering taking an assignment from Medical Express. The assignment is in NYC.

Has anyone ever traveled with this agency? Any good or bad experiences?

I am very nervous about traveling for the first time; I want this to be a very good experience. Any helpful advice is gratefully accepted.

Thanks!

Are they offering a completely furnished apt, and I mean everything........or are you expected to have to bring your dishes, linens, tv, etc. Remember that NYC has extremely high parking prices so if they expect you to drive...

you can figure on paying about $400 plus for parking in the city, usually higher than that.

Do you get you own apt, or do you have to share? Do they pay for all of your utilities, including telephone?

Be sure to check out the company you are going to travel with and even research the hospitals they are submiting your packet to. You can usually find alot about the hospital by doing that. Remember if your recruiter does not make you feel confident in the experience maybe you should check out another company before you commit. I found with my first assignment that I felt better taking an assignment closer to home for a short period (8 wks) and have since traveled across country. The most important thing is to get in writing what the travel company provides andbe sure you have a recruiter who will return your calls in a timely manner. You should have a 24 hour hotline or an after hours number for the recruiter for emergencys. If your first assignment isn't the best remember its for a limited amount of time and you can generally handle anything for 8-13 weeks! Just call it a learning experience!

may I ask a question I'm looking for a co. that will offer an assg. in nyc. how much are they offering as hr. pay?

Please, please do a search on this forum, the pay can vary widely, as well as what is covered for you. And depending on specialty and experience.

Specializes in pediatric neuro/neurosurg/rehab.

From what I've heard, Medical Express is part of a bigger company which is lower on the pay scale. The agency itself and/or the recruiter may be ok but I'm sure there are other companies with better pay benefits out there. I have not started travel nursing yet but I've done a lot of research on the different companies. You may find that some NYC/east coast agencies have better benefits since they deal with the area more?.?.?

American Mobile own Medical Express, so that means the pay is crap and shared housing without linens and pots/pans. If you don't know about AMN, read the thread "Heard of American Mobile". AMN owns Medical Express, O'Grady-Peyton, Preferred Healthcare, and Nurses RX. Therefore they all offer the same benefits, jobs, and wages. AMN does all the housing for all 5 companies. They are all owned by a company called Worldview. When I worked for Preferred and Nurses RX, my W2's came from Worldview, plus since tehy were teh same company all my paperwork transferred. Both companies were crap, and soon I figured out why. Because they were AMN.

I am working in New York right now with OA and I like it. I am not renewing my contract though since I don't wanna be here in the winter. I am at Nyack Hospital in Nyack , NY (30mins from Manhattan). I didn't want to work in NYC because I have done enough inner city hospitals this year, plus I like having a car. My company has me in a really nice completely furnished apartmet w/ phone and digital cable, a loft ( which I never use.LOL), and a washer/dryer ( which I LOVE having!). It is a really good location and I love being about to drive to NYC in under an hour. And there is plenty of places to park in Manhattan under $20/day for sightseeing. PM me for my pay rate and recuiter if interested.
