New School Nurse!!!

Published

I accepted a position today to be a new school nurse!!! I'm so excited!! The only little catch was the huge pay cut I had to take. I thought I would be enjoying summer's off, but I will probably have to work to make up the difference. It is my dream job with a nightmare salary!!! I'm thinking I'm going to have to get rid of my cable and eat ramon noodle soup for the next year!!!

:lol2:

Yippie Breezie!!:balloons: I am working in a 1/2 time position and the full time position I want in my local school district is being voted on tonight.:idea:Wish me well. You'll find that the paycut is well worth it. It's the best job I've ever had. What state are you in? In Pennsylvania, we follow the teacher's salary scale, so it is a large cut from the hospital but with regular raises, it catches up. Good luck!!! Get used to hearing things like "it must be nice now that all you do is put on bandaids" Just smile and agree.

Thanks so much!!! I'm in Louisiana and they actually have quite a few positions open. I'm guessing it's because of the pay. You would probably die if you knew how much I'm actually making!! It's actually about the same "per hour" as what I'm making now, but b/c it's only for 9 months there's a drastic difference. I just remind myself of the 2 week vacation at Christmas and the summers off!!!!

How long have you been a school nurse??

Hey Breezie!

Just got back from the school board meeting and I was hired for the full time position!!!:w00t:I'm so excited. I've been working in school nursing for about 6 years but until recently I was considered an "aid" even though I have been an RN for 21 years. Got hired as a Certified School Nurse in Feb. in a neighboring district and tonight I got full time at my local high school. I'm so excited and scared to death. Keep in touch and let me know how it's going!

*YAY*!!!!!!!! I'm so happy for you. You will be great!!!!

I'm having second thoughts about accepting my position. I will take a $12,000/yr pay cut. My family thinks I'm absolutely CRAZY. And I'm starting to wonder if I am too. I'm single, no kids. I know I can make it on the pay cut but it will be hard. I'm super stressed right now. Say a prayer for me... and keep me posted on your new job. Again:

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!

I'm curious as to the pay difference, it probably varies from district to district. I'm applying for a school nurse job. I haven't inquired regarding the pay, but I know it'll be a cut. If I get the job I plan to stay on at least per diem at my hospital.

It depends. Here in Pennsylvania, we follow the teacher's salary schedule, (if you work in a public school) but I think it varies state by state.

Hi Breezie nurse, I am go in going on an interview today for a school nurse position in NJ. I'm very nervous. I'm certified, but not really sure what the job intales, besides the basics, keeping a-45 and immunizations updated, kiisses of boo-boos asthma, etc. Do you have a schedule of the month to month duties, such as school physicals etc.

Thanx,

I just turned in my application yesterday and my interview will be next week. There is only one other applicant I was told. I don't have any experience in this area and it will be a huge leap of faith for me to take this job and give up the security of my familiar environment. Any advise?

Sorry nicrom, I don't have that much info either. I start on Tuesday. Like you said, immunizations, phsyicals, meds, diabetics, add. I'm really excited.

JLS, I didn't have any experience either. But in my area, they are in desperate need for nurses (I'm guessing b/c of the pay). They just required 2 years of experience. I would suggest a great, motivated attitude, desire to advocate for the kids, being a team player. I'll keep you in my prayers. Keep us posted!! :)

My interview went very well, I might get the job, I'll find out soon. They said as early as tonight, depending on when they could get in touch with references.
