New School Nurse/ Immunizations

Published

New School Nurse here.

So I'm receiving all the new kids immunization cards and it's so overwhelming, I have the immunization schedule and all but it still seems so hard. What if I miss something and the child is not complient with all vaccines.

Any help on who to contact or who can help me get everything in order and know what vaccines each child should have.

Help!!!!

I'm in texas

Not sure if Texas has the same requirements as California but we use the immunization guide on shotsforschool.org.

Hope that helps!

PM me, I'll give you my contact info, and I'll talk you through it. PK is the most confusing and most work because HIB and Pneumococcal are required. That goes away after age 5. It gets easier with KG thru 6th. I'm entering immunizations now.

It wont let me message you

The most confusing part is that some have 2 mmr and 2 varicella, but others have 1 mmr and 1 varicella.

But it depends to what grade they are going to right????

Yes, PK only requires 1 MMR and 1 Varicella. Here's PK:

DTAP - 4 doses

Polio - 3 doses

MMR - One dose on or after the 1st birthday (up to 4 days prior to 1st birthday for MMR and varicella)

Varicella - One dose on or after the 1st birthday or a documented illness

HIB - One dose on or after 15 months of age UNLESS a primary series and booster was received prior to or at 15 months of age. There is more clarifying material for HIB

Pneumoccoccal - Four doses if completed before 23 months. If not, one dose after 24 months.

HEP B - 3 doses

HEPA A - 2 doses

HIB and Pneumoccoccal requirements go away at age 5.

A complete Hib series is two doses plus a booster dose on or after 12 months of age (three doses total). If a child receives the first dose of Hib vaccine at 12 - 14 months of age, only one additional dose is required (two doses total). Any child who has received a single dose of Hib vaccine on or after 15 - 59 months of age is in compliance with these specified vaccine requirements. Children 60 months of age and older are not required to receive Hib vaccine.

2 If the PCV series is started when a child is seven months of age or older or the child is delinquent in the series, then all four doses may not be required. Please reference the information below to assist with compliance:

  • For children seven through 11 months of age, two doses are required.
  • For children 12 - 23 months of age: if three doses have been received prior to 12 months of age, then an additional dose is required (total of four doses) on or after 12 months of age. If one or two doses were received prior to 12 months of age, then a total of three doses are required with at least one dose on or after 12 months of age. If zero doses have been received, then two doses are required with both doses on or after 12 months of age.
  • Children 24 months through 59 months meet the requirement if they have at least three doses with one dose on or after 12 months of age, or two doses with both doses on or after 12 months of age, or one dose on or after 24 months of age. Otherwise, one additional dose is required. Children 60 months of age and older are not required to receive PCV vaccine.

3For MMR, Varicella, and Hepatitis A vaccines, the first dose must be given on or after the first birthday.

or did they only get 1?

what does it mean when it states "Hep A" 2 dose series???

They need 2 doses of Hep A. The ones that are generally non-compliant with this one are the ones coming from other countries. If a child is new to America, they will likely need this series of shots. They are given 6 months apart, so if you have a child with only 1 dose within the last 6 months, they can be enrolled provisionally, you just have to keep on them to get that second dose at the 6 month mark.

I know this sounds a bit extreme. But, when I was a brand new school nurse many moons ago, I was completely clueless. But, absolutely wanted to make sure that all the records were good to go. I called the State and told them that I wanted to make sure from the get-go that the immunizations were all up to date. They actually had the guy who does Immunization audits to come and look at all of them for me.
