New Rochelle School Of Nursing

Published

Anyone hear anything yet? I'm sitting on my hands in anticipation. :uhoh21:

Yes I go there now and am in the accelerated program. I am not happy with the school's administration. Very disorganized. I know of a girl who is in the accelerated program and who got her clinicals scheduled on the same day as day she had classes. The response from administration "oh well..looks like you'll have to drop classes that day" Ummm..how can you drop classes if you're in an accelerated program and want to finish in 18 months? I feel like this administration is not helpful at all to student's needs or concerns. The lack of professionalism in administration is unbelievable. The teacher's are hit/miss also. Some are very good and others are psychotic. The school does have very good clinical affiliations however. My major gripe with the school is that they are not looking to actively help students; rather it seems like they want to give students the toughest time possible.

I found out that I could not start until Spring 09.

yup been there. done that.

i feel the same way

i wont be starting the program until fall when i get in the school in spring. its annoying and depressing but we can all get through it!

I disagree,

I am currently at the college of New Rochelle, and I am impressed with their orgainzation skills. Yes I had a a brief experience with one of the hardest professors in the program, buut I believe people are hard on you because they expect alot from you. I am not in the accelerated program, I am an IT, but it seems like we always take on a negative attitude.

As far as Administration with tuition and stuff, yes they are a little disorganized but i think it is the influx of new students, this school is extremly small and they are dealing with more and more students every semester, I will give them the benefit of the doubt and expect them to clear everything.

For those of you who started Fall 2008 or earlier, how long does it take the bookstore to supply the books for the upcoming semester? I have been trying to get the books or at least a list of the books we need, but thus far the store says they haven't received anything from the professors yet. Maybe I am jumping the gun??

It will be closer to when school starts. If u want i can tell u what books to buy. Do not buy the pharm book, u will never use it. Let me know what classes u are taking and i will tell u what books to buy. Get the books online.

Hey goldruss,

I'm scheduled to begin classes at CNR Fall 09 as an IT student. Your post is over 6 months past, but I was hoping you could provide any suggestions on what books I should buy. You mentioned to MzA about not buying the pharm book - is there another book you would suggest in it's place?

I'll be taking 209, 209L, 212, 212L, 107, 207, 322 this Fall.

Thanks!

Hi Pyeung2,

While you only posed this question to Goldruss...I thought I'd add my 2 cents just in case you find it helpful too.

209/209L: You definitely need the Fundamentals of Nursing book. I'd skip on the APA books, unless you are totally unfamiliar with this style of citation. There are some great internet sites on APA style of writing. You won't need the nursing diagnosis book until the last half or last third of the semester. And the Fundamentals: Success book is helpful when studying for exams, but you don't need it to ace the course.

212/212L: You don't need the pharm book, but you will need the dosage calculation book.

107/207: You will need the book, but make sure to check which section you're in because one teacher uses Bates and another uses Jarvis, although both have the same info, with minor changes.

322: I didn't need either of the books, although I found "Caring for Patients..." to be interesting to read for my own knowledge.

Welcome to CNR...you're in for an interesting ride lol!

Hey MzA,

Thanks for the quick response! Your suggestions were very helpful as I will keep them in mind when I search for those books!

I also could not help but look through some of your prior comments on another CNR SON related topic. I read about you mentioning a course load scheduled to be finished within an 18 month time frame. I didn't know IT students can register for summer courses to expedite the path to graduation. I think I may need to inquire about that since Mrs. G charted out 5 regular semesters for me (with graduation in fall '11). I hope this is not some new policy where new IT students for the Fall '09 cannot follow suit in a similar fashion. If you don't mind me asking, who did you speak with to chart out a faster route through the program?

Secondly, do you still feel that the CNR SON program is like boot camp after your first semester? As a fellow 2nd degree nursing student, I'm right there with having to grind it out to do well in the program. However, I was curious if the professors are more along the "eat their young" lines of attitude in the classroom. And if that were the case, what methods would you suggest that helped you grind through? Thanks!

Hey Pyeung2,

As far as I know, IT students can register for summer courses. I am currently taking a few as we speak. Whatever you've charted with Ms. G is not set in stone. I think when I met with her, she did the same with me and I just took it upon myself to change it as I saw fit. I didn't actually go to speak with someone to do this. If you have the SON catalog, you can do the same (as long as there is not a new rule in place). You just need to make sure that the courses you plan to take will actually be offered during the semester in which you intend to take them. When it came time to register for the actual classes (in this case for the summer & fall), I just went to my advisor and gave her my registration form with my planned schedule. It was fairly simple. Also, when registration time comes around, the school gives you a list of the courses that are available for the upcoming semester with an indication of who can take the courses, i.e. RN, IT, etc.

I don't feel the program is was like boot camp (especially as a 2nd degree student). Granted there was a lot to get accustomed to just for the simple fact that this is a new, different type of school (for me) with its own rules and ways of doing things. I do not think the professors have the "eat their young" mentality. They were all pretty normal, with normal assignments and expectations. There is one professor that some seem to find intimidating, but she is nothing to be afraid of. She is very professional and likes things to be done a particular way. She is very clear about this. Contrary to what some students may think, the professors want us all to do well. If we don't, then that looks bad upon them and the school, and they cannot afford that.

My complaints with the school are mostly administrative in nature, as you will find in my previous posts. For example, I absolutely hate that registration & financial aid is done on paper and not on the internet. Overall, I'd rate my experience there about a 3 or 4 out of 5.

sorry...I meant to say "registration & financial aid *are*"

Thank you MzA! I can't wait to start my first semester. Good luck to you on the rest of your summer classes! BTW, I'm Phil - maybe we'll bump into each other on campus in sept.

hey pyeung2,

I was just wondering how your first semester is going? I was accepted for the IT for jan 2010,( because of that computer pre-req) But I am planning of doing it as fast as possible / being bumped into the accelerated program in june. I just wanted to know your thoughts about how it is going so far, it seems hard to find out info on this school from student perspective / how reputable it is. Thanks!!
