New RN salary in Doctor's Offices

U.S.A. New York

Published

What is a typical hourly salary for a new RN in a doctor's office in NYC? I got my first callback and it was from a doctor's office in Long Island. The lady asked me what kind of salary I was looking for and I said "24-26/hr". I think she got startled by that and said, "Um, well, in these times, our office can only a salary very different from what you ask for." I asked what kind of salary they had in mind and she kept saying that it's different from what I said and then said she had to get back to me. She hung up before even saying goodbye. Was I overshooting? I thought it was fair for all the responsibilities she said I would have (height, weight, bp, hx, injections, teaching, scheduling, follow-ups, blood draws). Please tell me what salary is fair to ask for without scaring away potential employers! :uhoh3:

mw37, i actually found the job on craigslist. i used craigslist for about 1 week and got the call for an interview. from what i heard careerbuilder and monster charge too much to advertise so many smaller businesses use craigslist to advertise for a job. it is kind of funny, i submitted resumes for 8 months to hospitals from manhattan to riverhead and not even one interview or an acknowledgment. then i tried craigslist as a last resort.

the only thing i can say is the pay and benefits are not that great. also i feel as if they can let you go for any reason and just hire another eager new grad rn to fill your spot. so i try to work extra hard to make sure i keep this job.

i was in the same mindset of starting out in a doctors office, but now that i am here, i want the hospital so bad. hope this info helped.

Thanks, LINurse! I've been looking on Craigslist also for jobs. You said you get paid 22/hour? (Sorry I don't want to be nosy!) What about health insurance? Vacation time?

I just don't think I could swing the night-shifts at hospitals, and I know a lot of new grads get hired into the night shift. A lot of the people I graduated with work night-shifts in hospitals now (in a different state), and it's already had such a negative impact on their health.

I am also a New Grad RN, just landed a job at a clinic, hired at a rate of $21/ hr. It isn't great but will pay the bills and of course the experience is a plus.

mw37, the benefits are not so good either. i start receiving health insurance and vacation after 3 months. but the best part is i only get one week vacation. i never hear of only getting one week. my last non-nursing job i started out with 2week and after 5 years had 3 weeks.

Only 1 week of vacation?!? You've got to be kidding me! That's horrible. My last non-RN job gave me 3 weeks of paid vacation, and I was considered part-time!

At this point if you are a new Grad what can you do. We need some type of experience and you can not negotiate since they may not give you the job. I think of this job as a stepping stone. I personally think it is crazy to only give one week. Good luck to everyone.

I agree with what you said! Like they say: Beggars are not choosers! We need all the experience we can get as new grads.

yep! I 100% agree! We definitely need ANY experience we can get! Once we have SOME experience as a registered nurse on our resumes, we'll be getting more calls!

So next time I get asked the dreaded salary question, what is the better response without scaring potential employers away?

I would caution you though that if your only experience is office nursing then it is almost impossible to obtain a hospital job.

Of course I haven't minded that for the last 17 years.......:smokin:

i agree with you crunchrn. an office job is not what a hospital is looking for but no job and new grad is worse at this point. at least if you have some type of nursing job even if it is in an office it my give you a slight edge over the hundreds of new grads.

also, the salary question is not an easy one to discuss. i was hoping for at least 23-25hr and did not try to negotiate once i was told. i assumed many new grads would be interviewed and there was no room for hesitation or indecision.

I know it would be tricky to switch to hospital nursing from doctor's office but at this point, I'm not getting any calls from hospitals AND nursing homes so I can't sit and wait for them. The only call I've gotten was from a doctor's office so that shows that they're the only ones right now that's willing to give me a shot.

So if I get asked during a phone screening what my salary requirements are, I should just say, "It's negotiable"? I need to find responses without having to give a number first...
