New RN program in So Cal!?!

U.S.A. California

For anyone who might care to share any info on this please do!

I was browsing http://www.rn.ca.gov/schools/rnprograms.shtml and voila a new RN program?! Everest offers a RN program?! I'm well aware of the LVN private schools and the public schools with the waiting lists for the RN. This must be a VERY new program, but its listed as accredited. I intend to call them as I'm a LVN student right now, but I had not noticed this school on the website a few months ago. I guess I'll give them a call, my curiosity must be settled.... definitely good news for nursing students in so cal.

APU is on my list to apply to.

Just gotta finish up that organic chem and physio.

For some reason when I was in college I took the chemistry sequence 1a/1b that is designed for chem/bio majors and that does not meet their requirement :(

I don't mind paying $15,000 a semester for a school that is accredited.

West Coast Univ says that a degree there will not transfer elsewhere.

APUalyssa. APU is more like USC than West Coast is. They both are private sure but one is considered to be a trade school whereas APU is not.

I will say this though as of this year West Coast University will be the biggest producer of RN's is CA so its reputation will build up ( or decline depending up on the school) over time. APU has been around longer.

Re the loans. Many of my friends have cars worth more than tuition at some of these "trade" school. Which payment is a better value in the end.

i know. (hello..i attend there) i never said that APU was a trade school or it was even like west coast at all. i was just saying that if CC's werent ideal for someone maybe they can do a trade school, CSU or perhaps a private. i know APU has been around and that it is like USC and its programs and bridge programs for RN's are fully accredited and everything.

and i do agree that trade school tuition is way cheaper that a private. if that helps

*so i just want to warn everyone, make sure where you go is FULLY accredited*

thats the key

thats good to hear!

i am finishing up some pre-req and will start APU's nursing program fall 2009 and i do attend there and i am doing the pre-req at APU until i get into the program

just to tell you. it is a christain type private university, so i mean if you get in and want to go, there is mandatory chapel and ministry classes (you get to choose from a list and stuff and they arent hard, most are quiet fun actually)

so i am just telling you because alot of people come clueless and complain that they have to attend chapel and stuff every once and a blue moon.

not saying your going to complain and you dont have to be a christian to go there at all. i am just forewarning you, but alas i hope i do not discourage you either

good luck

This is probably not completely true. it may not transfer everywhere you want it to especially not the CSU's but there will be schools you can add onto your education with.

I've heard Mount Saint Mary's is similar in its requirements which is a turn off for me as I am very secular.

Sorry that's what I meant to say. It won't transfer to state schools or UC schools.

But I would like to further my education after a BSN so that school is not an option for me.

Yeah once you go private it's harder to transfer out into the public system unless the school itself is prestigious.

this is very, VERY true.

private and trades schools are the hardest to transfer out/from

the thing with private schools is the i believe, dont quote me, but many of them have high degees, like say i wanted something higher than my BSN or whatever, well if i stay at APU i can get a masters or a phD in nursing too

http://www.apu.edu/graduatecenter/admissions/programs/?text_field=%3Center+keywords+or+leave+blank+to+browse+listings%3E&prog_group=group_2&prog_school=0&prog_subject=52&prog_location=0&Submit=Search

so i mean if people are looking to get a private or trade school just so they can start the program and then transfer somewhere else, they have another thing coming to them.

most private and trade schools do not transfer because the institution is private not linked to the state like UC and CSU are; like if you were to go to west coast then want to transfer to CSUF then the units might, or most likely will not transfer.

so if anyone is trying this method, i would either skip the private or trades school and suck it up and go to a CC or go straight to a CSU or UC

OR

go to the private or trade school and stay there and just get all your degrees there

oh and another thing is MOST trade schools dont offer anything higher than a BS or BA so that is also something to keep in mind

:D

Transferring out of a private trade school is possible though. I do have many friends that have gotten a private LVN and then gotten the associates from West Coast and then gotten their BSN elsewhere ( one of them even did the APU RN-BSN ) without too much strife but its BSN program doesn't transfer well.

Unfortunately for a lot of people ( young 19 and lucky to have realized nursing was for you early in life) have to or choose to go private as we have to be in the nursing field sooner in order to pay the bills.

oh i pay bills too, thats part of the program i am dreading because i am financially helping my mom and myself. so when i have to cut hours to do clinicals, i dont know what i am going to do

but it is nice i chose this early in life, the only pro for me in this situation

I know that feeling My first go round at uni I had to support my parents that had gone bankrupt.

What a few students in my class have done is they have contacted unemployment services and because they are in a training program to become a nurse which as we know is a high demand occupation and they are getting some form of unemployment check plus they can work 20 hours a week. PM if you need the details though you'll probably need to be accepted to the major if you aren't already

yeah i am basically supporting my mom because we are on the verge of bankruptcy (again...ugg) and i dont have a father so i mean i am the only one to help but its hard because i am also a student too, but i mean i work a for the gov. a student program from homeland security so i mean i work m&w&f 10 hours so i can put my classes t&th but its going to be impossible doing 9 hour a week clinicals and trying to work so i can get the money to pay my (and help my mother) bills

unless i can do clinicals like on weekends (my working job is only m-f) which i highly doubt.

whatever you know please do share!

not only me but for all of the working students or mothers or fathers out there!
