New RN program in So Cal!?!

Hi there,

I was wondering if you found out more about the RN program at Everest. I would be interested too. I'm currently on my CC waiting list and I don't want to wait another year.

I was browsing http://www.rn.ca.gov/schools/rnprograms.shtml and voila a new RN program?! Everest offers a RN program?! I'm well aware of the LVN private schools and the public schools with the waiting lists for the RN. This must be a VERY new program, but its listed as accredited. I intend to call them as I'm a LVN student right now, but I had not noticed this school on the website a few months ago. I guess I'll give them a call, my curiosity must be settled.... definitely good news for nursing students in so cal.

Most of these schools like Everest and West Coast University is VERY expesive. At the moment, West Coast University costs about $63,000! If your currently in a LVN Program then I would recommend a LVN to RN Bridge Program at ANY Community Colleges, much cheaper.

This is all personal preference! If you guys actually look at your school loan for these LVN Programs, the one I graduated from, which cost me $22,000. I pay about $190 a month and the ACTUAL payment that I am paying off this loan is about $30. God Bless America, ehh?

COULD YOU IMAGINE PAYING OFF A $63,000 LOAN?

I always look at it this way, why start off your new career in a HUGE debt?

Ooooh....my pay back is gonna be such a whooo!! I don't even want to think about it! I went the private school route to get my RN degree. I graduate in October with a BSN from an accredited school...and it ONLY (hahaha!) costed me $80,000!! That's a whole lot of 0s i know...but how bad do u want to get it over with?!!?

so i went mt. everest to get more info......the cost is 42,000 for the asn. you are done in 24months. they are only admitting between 30 to 40 students and it starts in july 14, 2008 and again on january, 2009. there are 500 applicants already for the july session. its based on a 12week quarter system....once the 12wks are up you only take 1 week off then you begin the set of 12wks again. classes are between 8-5, monday through friday. there were a lot of questions that were left unanswered due to fact they just got accredited. i don't know...what does everyone think? i think that reputation has a lot to do with going to a nursing program. for example, mt. sac at least has a good reputaion since they have been established for a long time and they're pass rate for the nclex is 95%! what to do? :banghead:

there were a lot of questions that were left unanswered due to fact they just got accredited.

what questions did you ask that they were unable to answer or did you have questions you expected would've been answered by what you heard?

no.....i went there personally and spoke with their advisor. clinical rotations, amount of staff for the nursing program, worst case scenarios...for example, as a nursing student it is highly recommended not to work. so therefore, if you have family with one income, what if your spouse looses their job and you need to be stopp the program, what then? those were some of my concerns since i have spoken to several people in the nursing program that have gone through something like that.

thanks for answering but it looks like they were unable to make guarantees for your personal life concerns? what concerned you about the actual program with regard to clinical rotations and staff?

Hi everyone, Sorry for the late reply, I will check this board more often! So here's the beans:

I went to Everest College in Ontario last week, the campus is nice and small, it looks like a normal office building, and less than 4 years old. It's a Corinthian-owned-college so Yup it's expensive ... 42,5K. However, compared to the other private LVN schools in the area (20-25k, Concorde is 30K!) I think 21K per year for an ADN is reasonable with financial aid. I'm pretty certain in a few years they'll be compelled to raise it to like $60k. :no: They DO accept college credit classes (they're not sure about CLEPs) of C or better which will definitely reduce the tuition costs. Pre-reqs to complete before starting the actual nursing classes are Microbiology w/lab, Anatomy and Physiology (these are included in tuition). The Basic GE classes included are: College algebra, sociology, gen. psyc, American Lit., English I & II, nutrition, and computer applications. The class limit is 40 with 10 placed on the waiting list. Classes are full time only for now, 8-4:30 M-Fri. (Fridays *might* be 8-12p). This is not for someone who has to work full time, unfortunately.

Since they recently became accredited in late April, exact class scheds, clinical rotations, etc., are being worked out. There are 8 quarters in 2 years, and the next starting class after July 14, will be in January. So, as new as they are, they'll be impacted also - allowing 80-100 students each year. Applicants are being weeded out with testing scores (2 tests). Once you pass these tests you can make an appointment to complete an essay at the school and interview with the Nursing Director which is about an hour. They choose from the pool of applicants with the best scores, but also I think its somewhat first come first serve, and they are choosing Now.

I've gone through all these steps and fin. aid, and was told that I have a seat. I live very close so I was able to complete the process quickly & I'm very excited! YAY!

If any one is interested in this college, don't wait to make an appointment with a rep! The reps and staff can't answer all the questions because the program is so new but they'll tell you what they know. The nursing dept. staff are very friendly btw.

a bit more...

They do offer a LVN-RN bridge. LVNs will need at least 1 year acute care experience, a valid license, LVN transcripts with a cumulative gpa of 3.0, and pass the NLN ACE I-PN to RN exam. Also, the normal pre-reqs need to be completed and the start date would be in the 5th quarter of the ADN program. This is straight out of there recent info packet. :paw:
