Finally after a massive 4 month job search- I got a job offer!
a. it is night shift
b. they do have a 4 week orientation (2wk day and 2 wk night)
I am nervous about starting this as I think I have forgotten everything I learned in school! So I am reviewing but wonder if anyone has any ideas about concentrating this intense review. I start in 2 weeks and want to bet ready... any ideas?
Thanks for any and all help. cherie

Yes what type of unit? A 4 week orientation sounds really good to me. Many congratulations!
Bedpan and Jules, thanks for the encouragement! It's the med/surg floor of a small hospital. I did many clinicals there and am somewhat familiar with electronic charting and layout.
I want to be ready my first days. This feels like studying for the NCLEX all over again! yikes.

I'm still a student (grad in 2009:up:), but today we had a discussion group with returning students who graduated this year and started new jobs.
They admitted that they couldn't possibly remember every detail from nursing school, just that they remembered some important things about some topics.
Their advice: Ask questions, don't be afraid. Ask the rationale, don't just accept an answer of "that's just how we do it". If your orientation period isn't adequate, ask for more time. Most important, take care of yourself--you can't be a good nurse if you aren't healthy and rested.

4 months to find a job? I thought the market was wide open for nurses?? Congrats on your job. It is impossible to remember every small detail you learned in school, unless you are Lexi on Grey's Anatomy.....

"Wide open" is a relative thing: there may be lots of jobs that not everyone wants to take; we've seen alot of new grads waiting on their 'dream job' and that can take a LONG time. However, sometimes new grads ARE willing to take whatever's open, and in some areas of the country, there's not much. Varies greatly around the country as to whether there's enough of a shortage to get new nurses jobs quickly, or in the areas they'd prefer. The areas with the least amount of turnover often have the greatest appeal, so....sometimes it can take longer.

Yeah, here it definitely is. I had recruiters calling me everyday from all of the area hospitals and accepted a job months before I graduated.

The Indian Health Service and Bureau of Prisons always have jobs.
