New rn graduates help!!!!!!!!!

Hi my name is marianys i passed my board last year. I've been looking for a job since i have applied everywhere and everybody turns me down because i need 1 year of experience. I need all new grads to help me please i called the state board and they told me to call the hospital and nursing association in my state, i need all new grad from florida that dont have a job to let me know because i'm going to talk to them and they evidence . This is not only for florida you can do it in your state too. If you graduated and dont have a job we need to speak up !!!!!!!!

Our nursing instructors advised us to continue our education even if part-time just to have something on your resume. :) New grad where do you live? Are you willing to relocate? What are you doing in the meantime while you are looking for a nursing job?

I am in the same boat in NJ even though I have 8 months of sub-acute/LTC experience since becoming an RN about a year ago. I am fortunate to work in the sub-acute of a major healthcare system, but there's a "but". I am employed per diem and even though in the begining the available hours were decent, now it appears the census have gone down affecting dramatically my hours.

These bad times for gradute RNs have really affected me emotionally and the reason is: Even though my wife is a Med-Surg Critical Care RN for over 8 years and even though I did work at her hospital in the ER as a PCT during Nursing school, I still cannot get back in as an RN during these bad times. Then I had another dismal recruitment experience: I was fortunate to interview and receive an offer to work on a Med-Surg unit for another Healthcare system, but the offer was recinded when the census dropped on the unit and across the hospital. As matter of fact I was told that a formal hiring freeze was being instituted across the board for RN hiring during this time. Now you can understand how my emotions are after this experience. Being a recent graduate RN, it has been very difficult to break into any hospital in NJ. And many hospitals give the same impression: they don't want to "touch" any new RNs during these down economic times for the same reasons indicated thoughout these threads. Enough venting and negativism.....Just need to focus on the positive. Anybody else from NJ with their experiences? Good luck to all.

Rochester General and Unity (formerly Park Ridge) will hire new grads who have not sit for their boards yet. Strong only hires new grads with their RN license.

Rochester General - put your resume in online. I would also send it. I will send you a private message with the Nurse Recruiter's name.

Unity - also apply online. Then call the NR. I'll send you her name and number.

Highland I believe is also hiring. Several of my classmates applied there and got hired. I know they are online also. I never applied there, so I can't give you more info.

Keep pressing foward, keep hoping, keep believing...do what you have to do recognize the that we are all faceing...must of all pray for an opening just for you...:)

Am glad you took the exam and passed. I am in my first year and having my third exam tomorrow. My exam is going to base on Hypertension, Oxygenation and Nurtrition or diabetes. Any information on website that i will get information on? pls let me know.

Well I cant think of a website right now but there is a great book out there that can help you a lot. Unfortunately I did not buy it until like my last semester,it's a review book it has OB, Pediatrics Fundamentals, it's great for all your classes, its called NCLEX to it's the Saunders Comprehensive Review. As hard as it is for you, please remember that the problem is not unique to nursing. There are new accounting graduates that are not finding jobs, new physical therapy graduates that are not finding jobs and new law school graduates that are not finding jobs. I am glad you are eager to work and I hope that you find a solid position soon but, in the meantime, try not to take on the 'victim' role. It will make it harder for you to keep your focus and it might accidentally creep into an interview or application.

Here is my best advice as a 24 year RN: Make the pursuit of a job your full time job - put in full 8 hour days of looking, applying and interviewing. Keep checking back with all potential employers on a regular basis [most have websites now that change daily] and try to get that first job as soon as possible. Don't hold out for the 'perfect' one - just get your foot in the door. Do your very best work even if you think your talents could be better utilized elsewhere and make sure that you can get a good recomendation if you ever decide to move on. Lastly, remember what this moment feels like so that, when the time comes and you are the one that gets to do the hiring, you can be the manager that every new RN needs in that first position.

Thanks, I understand, I've been doing what you said for over a year now, I have a huge list of all the hospitals in my area, I've been going on their websites and applying but a few of them respond. When you go on the websites there is a minimum of 20 RN jobs per hospital, the problem is not that there are no jobs, it's that they dont want new grads. The good thing about nursing is that you can choose, I know that may be now I dont have a job but in the future like you said I can be the manager. Thanks for your advice god bless.

no offense but it's not discrimination to hire someone with experience over a new graduate nurse, and many experienced nurses are not finding jobs either, because they have to pay them too much! what the hospitals want is that nurse with a "couple" years experience so they don't have to train them, but not "many years" because then they have to pay them more. articles are starting to come out about the "truth" of the nursing shortage. the nursing board and the nursing schools benefit from people thinking there is a shortage, because they still make their money (unless all these student loans start going into default,...then maybe they will make it a personal case).

i know it is a rough situation right now because of the economy. unfortunately, complaining to the state board is still not going to land you a nursing job. i would put your efforts into looking into various states, networking like crazy. applying at every job that even sounds like it has a remotely medical background. i know this is frustrating, but there are tons of new grads, and hospitals are closing down and cutting back.

hope things turn around, but looks like it's going to be slow moving.

hi i still believe is wrong because like i said when you go online there's like a minimum of 20 rn jobs, i've been applying everywhere and they wont hire me because i dont meet the criteria. in a way they are discriminating you because you are new. i know they are asking from 1 to 2 years when you see it it's not a lot but if you're new how are you going to get that if they wont hire you, you know what i'm saying. i know education is like a business, all they want is money, it's outrageous, but if i don't complain to state board then who i'm going to complaint to. i've applying to like all the states. thanks for the advice anyway god bless.

just thought i would let you know of one really great opportunity. i am a new grad i just got hired at mayo clinic in jacksonville to work in the operating room. twice a year they hire a batch of about 12 new graduate nurses to train and place in various areas throughout the mayo clinic hospital. i have friends in micu, post-op transplant, surgical, medical, etc..they are accepting applications again in may. it is a great place to work for and if you could find a way to sell yourself really well i'm sure you could get an interview. just a thought!

hi rachet, well i know there are a few opportunities out there, but some are hard to get into, i'm definitely going to look into that. i have a few friends that are working but the majority of them haven't been able to find anything and they're working in home health agencies which by the way is horrible because you don't learn anything at all, but i'm going to do everything that i need to do to solve this problem. thanks for the advice god bless.

Dear frustrated grad,

I am in the same position, its been almost a year and I am without a job and my loan officers are hunting me down! I have also come to realize that it is much more difficult for nurses seeking pediatric jobs more so than adults! :(

Yeahh tell me about that I'm in the same spot, I already have to pay my loans, and they're not cheap. yeap there're more geriatric opportunities but once you get like a med surg it will be easier to get there. I'll keep you posted on what they're going to tell me, I believe that we can change this around. Good luck God bless.

Are you applying in the Rochester area? If so, let me know, I might be able to help. Where I work, they are still hiring, but you have to be a PITA with the HR person.

well i had to get another job because i couldn't sit around and do nothing, i live in south florida. i know i have to keep studying if not i'll forget everything but it's hard to keep up. like i said i'm considering moving to another state if there an opportunity. but in the meantime i have to keep trying. thanks

Just thought I would let you know of one really great opportunity. I am a new grad I just got hired at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville to work in the operating room. I was just in touch with Mayo and their saying their not doing residencys until september!
