I am a May graduate with an RN license but no job prospects. Does anyone have any tips, advice, etc for the job search? I've applied for several internships and spoken with the some nurse recruiters to no avail? Does anyone know of any recruiters or openings for new grads in Houston? What is one to do to get hired as a new grad if not chosen for an internship? The frustration is building....

I can tell you that although Methodist hospital in the Houston area has and internship program they will hire new grads and give them an orientation without going through the program. Also UTMB in Galveston will hire new grads also without going through an internship. I am sure there are more opportunities then that but those are two places that I am familiar with. Good Luck.

Apply in time for the internships, as they fill up quickly. For example, Memorial Hermann only hires new grads in May and January.
Another option is to go outside of the Houston city limits. Houston is swamped with new grads. Even Ben Taub has a waiting list of about 90 new grads. Once I looked into places in Conroe, The Woodlands, etc. I had offers left and right. Don't just look at major hospitals. Look at smaller, less advertised facilities like the Nexus Health Systems.

Is the "shortage of nurses" we hear about always more in rural areas and not in cities such as Houston? I've been wondering about this.

I am so sorry that you are having so much trouble getting your foot in the door. I agree with the advice to look outside TMC. Houston has a lot more to offer than just the med center.
It is true - if you are want to enter the workforce via a structured program (internship, residency, etc) you need to plan ahead and jump in early. These programs are very expensive and resource-intensive, so organizations have to carefully maintain schedules to ensure that they have enough educators & preceptors. They can't run these programs continuously.
I believe that the majority of "non TMC" facilities are very welcoming to new graduates. I know that my organization is. We don't impose any organizational limitations on hiring new graduates. However, there are some limitations that do arise. For instance, a department may simply not have enough preceptors to bring in more new grads - so a manager cannot hire anything but experienced nurses for a while.
Houston has new hospitals springing up all over the place - from the Woodlands to Katy to Pearland. Don't give up - just broaden your horizons.

There are nursing shortages in Houston too. However, they are short of EXPERIENCED nurses.
