New RN, cant find a job...

Published

Hi, I graduated with my BSRN in May, and recently passed my boards in Sept. But now I am having a hard time finding a job. My top choice hospital says that their new grad programs start twice a year, one in aug (for the may graduates), and one in march (for the december graduates). So basically if I want to work for them, I need to wait until MARCH!! This is ridiculous to me.........I never thought I would have a hard time finding a job as an RN, and thats why I decided to take some time off after graduation and didnt secure a job before I took my boards. But I am just not ready to wait around after having passed the boards for 4 more months before I start to work....There is just something wrong with this picture. Other hospitals have similar programs for new grads that only start around twice a year.....so I dont really have a choice. I dont know what to do.....Any advice???:uhoh21:

It sounds as if you are limiting yourself to thos places that have official "programs" for New Grads. These programs are only as good as they are. I was in a New Grad program that was really just lip service, but recently I worked at a place that seemed to be really commited to them.

You need to look at all the opportunities for Nurses in your area, ALL the hospitals, not just your top choice, or those that advertise New Grad programs. Give HR a call, and speak to the recruiters about what they can do for you as a New Grad. You will need to display flexibility with hours, and areas of work. I imagine you will find a recruiter that can help you find a position before March.

Where are you and what are you looking for? There are plenty of hospitals around here that have new grad/nurse resident programs, but they will also give you an excellent orientation if you miss it. I missed the first one by two days, but I still get to take all of the IV classes and diabetes etc.. classes that the nurse residents take...and there were so many of us that didn't get to take our boards until later because the BON was SOOOO slow...that they even started another one...so I get to be in it. I would do what the other poster suggested and contact a recruiter in HR at one of the hospitals and see if she can't find a fit for you.

Hi PedsRN, Thanks for responding. I am in Georgia aswell. I was looking into Gwinnett Medical & Emory. Can you give me some more info on the hospitals that you looked into. I am planning to call the recruiter at the hospitals that I am interested in to find more info. The first time that I called I spoke to the Nurse Residency coordinator. So I will give it another shot with the recruiter and keep you guys posted.

I'm at St.Joe's and I am not sure if you have to be in the official new grad program if you're not in critical care (I'm in the CVICU) but it's worth a shot to call. I know our program was March and August, as well.

Good luck.

Nurses are treated like dirt, find another profession that is respected.
