New Residents, Eeek!

Nurses General Nursing

Published

The new interns have been at my hospital for one week now. I just worked the last 3 days and found myself catching lots of mistakes, some minor (ie forgetting to notify anesthesia that their services will be needed for CVL placement) to major (ie throwing parts of chart in shredder because he "changed his mind" about what he had wrote" or asking nurse if a PICC line is spelled "PICC" or "PICK".) One of my other pt's became so fluid overloaded from the exceptionally high rate they were running her NS that she gained 14lbs (in 4 days  )

Sorry, just vening about these newbies. Hoping nurses out there are being supe rvigilant that work in teaching facilities and hoping these guys grow up quickly.

I work in a teaching facility. Haven't seen anything too big. I am a newer nurse so maybe I miss it right along with the new intern? i have seen signs and symptoms of Fluid overload when pts have had fluid running for days esp after a surgery.

I've never before been the RN at a birth where the woman has received a 4th degree lac. I've just been the RN at TWO 4th degree lacs in the last two weeks.

We don't hesitate to jump in and take charge and order things (under the guise of "would you like me to administer some IM methergine, and do you think some rectal Cytotec would be a good idea?") if we see the intern is in over his/her head.

Yes, but they need to be well supervised by their chief resident and attending..

...and the experienced nurses.

Wow! Don't know what to say about SDN....just went over there are read a thread bemoaning the "encroachment" of "Noctors" into their fields.....and either how to avoid Noctor fields or stop those uneducated, inexperience, under-intelligenced Noctors!

They talked about how their 15,000 of clinical hours can't compare to a DNPs 500 - 800.

.

Their manner of approach may be wanting but with the bolded above, I would be hella upset too!

There are right paths.

I am old enough to be your mom and don't make me use my mom voice! lol We have a few good ones this month, and a few that aren't going to get out of the unit with their behind intact.

I used to use the "old enough to be your mom" all the time. In more recent years I could even use "I'm old enough to be your grandma, and trust me... the day will come when you'll wish that you were a little NICER to granny."
