Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi nurses and future nurses,

I am a new member at this thread. I am currently 24 yr, have 2 semesters left to finish a BAS in Business Management and I was laid off almost 2 months ago, I got really dissapointed of not being able to get al least a call after having applied about 100 online jobs and others. When I just started college back in 06 I had enrolled myself for the nursing program but got discouraged by others saying that the nursing program was really hard and a gave it up without giving a try and changed it for the business career which was easier. Being a nurse has always been in the back of my mind; these 2 months I havent been doing anything helped me realise that I am ready to pusue my dream of become a nurse, I know it will be hard but i will not give it up this time, I am so eager to fulfill my real dream. I will start taking my pre-requisite classes on August, and one thing I got a job as a personal care attendant at an agency and will work there as a CNA once i get my liscence. I know this career change will be totally different from my business degree, but honestly I have never enjoyed my business job as I was supposed to, I get so bored being closed in a four wall building and not interacting with other people rather than my coworkers. I look forward hear your opinion.

It is great that you are going to make the change to pursue an education that will lead you towards doing what you enjoy. I too am almost in the same boat you are in.

I am 21 and just recently graduated with a BS in Criminal Justice in hopes of getting into law enforcement ( far from nursing I know....) I realized towards my junior/senior years in college that this was not really something I wanted to do. Even before I started school for criminal justice I was interested in nursing, but I never pursued it because I thought it would be too hard for me. Criminal Justice was much easier and the courses were interesting which helped me keep my grades up because the more you are interested in the subject the better you will do in it. Although I do sometimes feel like I wasted 4 years on pursuing a Criminal Justice degree when I really want to do nursing now.... I just keep thinking it was not a waste, and all my general education requirements will transfer over to a BSN anyway.

It has been only 2 months since I graduated college and I recently applied to a BSN program to begin in the Spring of 2012. I am hoping to get in, and if I do get accepted I have made the commitment to work as hard as I possibly can to accomplish my goal of becoming a nurse. If I don't get in I will continue to try and work to get into a BSN program to become a nurse. Although I am still worried that the science courses will be hard considering the last time I took science courses was in HS (5 years ago) and I got mostly C's (I took forensics in college but that was simple stuff).

Business and Nursing are also two pretty separate fields, but I am sure you will be able to do well with this change. There are tons and tons of people who make career changes every day. You will be happy you made this choice in the long run.

So when do you start taking your pre-requisite classes? Same as me just got two semesters left to get a Bachelor in Business but i will not finish it since i will start my nursing pre-requisite classes in August.

Good luck with your studies.

I am going to start my prereqs in the Spring of 2012.

I am hoping to get accepted into the BSN program I applied for because then I can just take the prereqs while in the program..... If I don't get accepted I will just take as many prereqs as I can in the Spring of 2012 at another school and finish them up in the summer or fall of 2012 then apply to a different nursing program.

And thanks- Good luck to you also.
