New passing standard for nclex 2013-2016...Great

Well this sucks...As everyone may know the ncsbn updates the nclex test plan every 3 years. Since the last update was in 2010 the updated test plan will become effective this April. Blah blah blah...im sure most of you know this. Anyways not much has changed at all with test plan but I just found out that the nclex will be a little harder than the 2010-2013 test.Do not want to stress folks out just wanted to share this piece of interesting information that I found on the Internet. The National Council of State Boards of Nursing 2013 NCLEX-RN®Test Plan handbook explains the newest test design:

The NCLEX-RN Examination is administered to candidates by computerized adaptive testing (CAT). CAT is a method of delivering examinations that uses computer technology and measurement theory. With CAT, each candidate's examination is unique because it is assembled interactively as the examination proceeds. Computer technology selects items to administer that match the candidate's ability. The items, which are stored in a large item pool, have been classified by test plan category and level of difficulty.
After the candidate answers an item, the computer calculates an ability estimate based on all of the previous answers the candidate selected. The next item administered is chosen to measure the candidate's ability in the appropriate test plan category. This process is repeated for each item, creating an examination tailored to the candidate's knowledge and skills while fulfilling all NCLEX-RN Test Plan requirements. The examination continues with items selected and administered in this way until a pass or fail decision is made.
All registered nurse candidates must answer a minimum of 75 items. The maximum number of items that a registered nurse candidate may answer is 265 during the allotted six-hour time period. The maximum six-hour time limit to complete the examination includes the tutorial, sample questions and all breaks. Candidates may be administered multiple choice items as well as items written in alternate formats
These formats may include but are not limited to multiple response, fill-in-the-blank calculation, ordered response, and/or hot spots. All item types may include multimedia such as charts, tables, graphics, sound and video. All items go through an extensive review process before being used as items on the examination

I didn't watch the video so I don't know if it's mentioned, but one of my instructors told us that pharmacology is one of the subjects they are increasing. Just FYI. Know your meds!

There are multiple sources if review for content and test strategies. Most have a cost... There are books, online reviews, classroom reviews. Kaplan offers all three. Hurst offers at least a book & online. NCSBN offers an online review via learningnext. There are books by Saunders, ExamCram, Mosby, LaCharity, and others. You need to figure out what will work best for your needs. Use the candidate report sent to you if you didn't pass previously to work on your areas of weakness that didn't meet the minimum standard of an entry level nurse. You need to determine if you need to review content, testing strategies, or both.

If US educated, check with your school of nursing for assistance as they want you to pass.

If you failed more than once you need to check with your board of nursing if a mandatory board approved refresher course is required. (Not the same as an NCLEX review, cost is higher and it requires clinical and classroom time)

NCLEX-RN is still a minimum of 75 questions with a maximum of 265. Not sure where you found that the minimum questions changed. The computer shuts off when based upon CAT that you have either proved minimum competency with reasonable statistical certainty (or lack of competency with a reasonable statistical certainty)

Does anyone know if there is a difference btwn the Kaplan 2013-14 version compared to the 2012-13 version? The newer one is cheaper... Also I live in canada will this help me pass the exam? If there is any other suggestions of what I can use to pass as an international nurse it would be greatly appreciated

Hi Courtney! I am not sure about the difference, between the 2013 and 2014 but i just took Kaplan and found out i passed the NCLEX-RN TODAY!! Kaplan helped me a lot! I am also an international nurse. They have a "special course" for international nurse but the difference is a few videos and seminars about nursing in the US. You can email me if you want at [email protected]. Good luck!!!
