Congrats to all--huge class, great to see you all at orientation last Tuesday night!
Just wanted to list this information I have found, may be helpful to some.
--best deal on stethoscopes I have found is medisave.net (I bought the Littmann Classic II SE) and the engrave for free.
--I bought my books yesterday. I bought the "bundle" for $643 in the Jeff State book store. I will tonight, list EVERYTHING that included in the "bundle" and there individual cost so we can see what the actual value of buying the bundle is. If someone already know this, please share because the book store did not even not know what books were in the bundle!
--my understanding that you can get your childhood vaccine records from the county you had them in health department (no matter how long it has been). I am calling on that today and will post what i find for Jefferson County.

WOW!!!! Thanks for all of the helpful information. I have not even had time to think about what I need to do. Do you know if we need the stethoscope for the first class?? Let me know about buying the books in the bundle...if it was a better deal or not. Also, are the books new or are they used? Again, thanks for all of the helpful information.
apparently it is hard to get used nursing books because students usually keep them for reference rather than sell them back...so I found best to go ahead and just suck it up and buy new. I STILL have to find time to sit down and list what is in the bundle, it is 2 boxes of books---seems to be a better deal.
I have already prepared myself to buy all new books. I know that I will keep mine after I graduate so I figured that I would just buy them all new. Do you know if we will need the stethoscope for this first semester?
ya know, just not clear on if we need the steth for first sem..I started reading the Health Assessment book and it seems reasonable that we could start practicing with it for some stuff...even just on each other.

Info from a 2nd semester student -- buy the membership to Barnes and Noble, and get your books from there. You will get your money back with your first order, and you will need plenty more study aids and you can use the membership for the discount on them!!!

I'm a current nursing student at another school, and I've already had Patient Assessment (may be called something different there) and we needed our stethoscopes for vital signs. As for the immunizations my understanding that you can get your childhood vaccine records from the county you had them in health department (no matter how long it has been). I am calling on that today and will post what i find for Jefferson County. I had this same information, but it's wrong. The health department only has records of immunizations that you had at their facility! Also, if you are not up to date on all immunizations, you will need boosters anyway. If you have had chickenpox, you can save yourself some money by having a titer done to prove your immune, otherwise the vaccination is $110! My insurance wouldn't cover having repeat immunizations, so I had to pay out of pocket. The health department downtown was the cheapest.
That is correct, I went to Jefferson County last week. They only have the records IF you had the shots at that facility. I have an appointment tomorrow to start my Hep b series/tetorifice and titer...I will post how much it cost at my family practitioner.

I know that the Hep B is around $30 per shot and you need 3 shots. That is what they told me at shelby county health dept. If anyone gets $ on titers, please post. I am calling my MD tomorrow with the specfic list but I am sure it is not going to be cheap.....
My titer was $25 dollars at my MD, the HepB was $57 at the Health Department in Jefferson County - was $180 at MD! I shopped around and ended up at the County Health Department...still spent $280 for my physical (deductible), titer and immunizations...but I had to have an MMR, tetorifice, HepB, tb, and chixpox titer...insurance only covered my "physical"
I got my physical completed with my ob/gyn on my last post partum check up and he had done a rubella titer. I have had a tetorifice already as well. So that leaves me with chicken pox, measles & mumps titers & hep b. Where you able to get all of that done at Jeff Co Health Dept (Downtown)? Did you make an appt or walk in? The $ 57 charge for hep b covered all three times? When do you have to go for the second? Thanks ahead for the info!!!!
The MMR shot was cheaper than titers for each, so I went that route. I just walked in and signed in and waited my turn. The $57 is per time. Yes, the JeffCo Health Dept can cover all that (well, don't know about the titers)
