hello all,

i wanted to see how many ns are like me. i am starting ns in august and i am 58 years young. just wondering how many more there of us!!!

Seasoned hopeful.I have to say first, im so sorry for your loss. My brother is in the grips of addiction as well as a teenage daughter I had to put in "house jial" for 3 years and home school due to drug abuse issues. And Just recently I lost my nice and her fiance to what appears to be a suscide pact..both were bipolar..one od'd..after the other threatened to commit suicide and while driving to her "thinking/Jumping place on nearby mountain..went head on into a truck.was 21. and a student nurse ..top of her class..but meds were all askew..as is common with bipolar d.o....so is difficult to know what actually happened.I dont know your loss..I only know mine. But My heart empathizes and I am so proud of you and your accomplishments! If you ever need to talk and want my email.I am a good listener..Although in a computer forum.my usual shyness, makes me seem very talkative.((hugs))

can I say I am nearing 50..and

and....also starting back to get BSN..I am an LPN.:o)

(computer hiccups)

I'm 54 and waiting to hear if I've been accepted to an ADN program or January 2010. If I'm not accepted to that, I will apply again for the fall and also apply to some accelerated second degree BSN programs. I'm pretty concerned about financing my education. I don't want student loans but as a single parent, I really don't have enough disposable income to save anything for school. Plus I live in an area where the cost of living is high. I think I'd manage pretty well if I went to the ADN program. So far I've received scholarships and grants that have paid for all my tuition and books and tuition is dirt cheap anyway. It's the living expenses that concern me if I'm not able to work full-time.

Hi, I'm 51 and starting second semester in August. Thank goodness, my class has at least 10 who are over 45! I'm in an ADN program; because it's important that I not rack up a huge debt. However, I work at a hospital that provides tuition reimbursement and have only had to take a small student loan out.

It's nice to see a support group for those of us following our dreams. Most of us have waited a long time to take time for ourselves! The best thing about being over 50? we don't overreact to every situation and know that most of the time things just work out.

Hello, I am 56 and starting an RN program at a community college this fall. I am worried about finding a job once I

graduate due to my age. I will be 58 when I graduate and take the RN test. I wonder if I am doing the right thing.

I am 57 and am in my 3rd quarter of 4 enrolled in a PN Program. I hopefully will graduate this coming March, 2010. My GPA is 3.75, doing good so far. Alot of work, but I think it will be well worth it.

I am 51 and hoping to get into next fall 2010 LPN school, I am scared to death,,,believe it or not my biggest worry is taking the TABE and Teas test I have to take. I am brushing up on my math it has been over 30 years since I graduated HS and no college. What is on the TABE test? I bought study books for both

OK - I am not 50 (I'm 45) but can relate to this older nursing group so decided to post because of the question about how to pay for it & accruing large loans later in life....that was a big dilemma for me as I was trying to decide between our BSN program here in town & the ASN local community college program. I decided on the Associates Degree because with that, I could pay for it out of pocket, but our BSN program would have me taking on about a $20,000 loan. I would like to have a Bachelors Degree, but really wanted to remain debt-free if I could during this process so that was the basis of my decision. Anyone else have to decide the same thing & what did you decide to do?

Same here, Renae. I really want my BSN (at least), but I'm taking baby steps, largely because of the cost. I have a daughter in college also, so I have to think of the costs involved in her education too. I'm really hoping that once I'm working as an RN I might find a hospital that will help pay for my further education. If not, I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

Here's wishing us all the very best! I start my ADN next Tuesday with orientation, NS starting proper the following day. Yikes!

:stdnrsrck:

It is encouraging to know there are others in my age group. I see some people who may be around my age at my orientation (5 out of a 100 member class),

Good luck to all of you. in your 50's.

I am using savings to finance my ADN. Fortunately, I have a retirement settlement from previous employment as a chemist, so I am alright financially. My concern is finding employment as a new RN at 58. If I am competent and fit for the job, does anyone know if age will be a big setback? I keep going back and forth on whether to forget it and refund my tuition. It is causing me a lot of angst. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I worry about this, too. Provided I'm accepted into a program next year, I will be 57 by the time I graduate.

Although I am only 41 I decided to say to all you older than me that if you do not act like your in your 50's you should be alright. There was a nurse on our clinical rotation that was in her 50's when she graduated but she did not act like she was older she could outrun most of us. BTW my school has mostly nontraditional students and I have been able to finance it because it was inexpensive in comparison and settled for ASN because of the cost,=.
