Hello to all nurses,
I have found this website through a friend, and believe me it is really helpful to know that you actually have somewhere to refer to when you need help.Ok,I am a RN who worked in critical care for a good 5 years and decided to go for school nursing in this brand new school.Thing is I'm not sure where to start on standards of procedure(SOP),do we need to create our own, what happens if there is an issue at school for example any outbreaks, severe injuries and so many more for me to mention.
This school is mainly accepting students from 3-12 at the moment.I had recently created some forms on head injuries, stating what parents are suppose to look out for the first 24-48 hrs.The school mainly has minor first aid cases on a day to day basis. Please help!!!
Azilah Chan.

Are there any resources at the district level, or is this a private school? The National Association of School Nurses website will be helpful to you, and I would also try finding out if your state has a School Nurse Consultant (if I remember correctly, they have a list at the NASN website, or else try googling to find it.) This site is a wealth of information as well. You can also look at the websites of districts near you, see if their Health Services Department has anything online, and cheat off them, lol.
It must be incredibly difficult starting from scratch, I am lucky that my district has all the forms and policies lined up for me. This first year may be difficult, but hang in there because once you get the basics down it will get better!

You've got quite a task ahead of you, but don't go reinventing the wheel. Contact some local schools that are similar to your own school to get copies of their policies and procedures. Get input from several schools and custom fit their policies to fit the needs of your school. Also - local schools and the internet can help you with creating forms or can even lend some to you. I found a great website a while back with every form you could want - will try to find again.

This site was an absolute lifesaver to me when:nurse: I started as a school nurse. I still get email updates daily. You should be able to find any form you need on here. Good luck in your new postion.

I agree with what everyone posted, especially the ny school health services website! I found calling/e-mailing other nurses in similar schools really helpful too. We are private; when I started, I found these guidelines from the state of Illinois to be a good resource: http://www.luhs.org/depts/emsc/Schl_Man.pdf.
