New Nurse Needs Advice- ASAP.

I graduated from nursing school in may. I began my career in a great hospital on nights. after i realized i couldn't handle nights- i left for a clinic. now i am not happy. i miss the hospital. and i am not getting alone with the manager of the clinic- who has no nursing experience and tries to tell me how to do everything.

the hospital is hiring days now- do i go back or stick it out here? i need advice!!

I could've written your post 6 months ago. If it's what you want go back to the hospital - if they will take you back. Some will not rehire. Make sure you have the job before you quit the clinic.

I too went from nights (cuz I was sick all the time) to a clinic with a manager who had NO education, let alone management skills. She tried to tell me how to do my job. HA HA. Anyway - at the end of it all her and the Dr's wife. At the end of a day asked me point blank 'do I feel I can answer to the manager?' My response was ' do you want the truth? No I cannot answer to her, she has no education, tries to tell me how to do my job and she can't do it - she doesn't know anything about what I do. SO N-O I do not feel I can answer to her.' So it was mutually decided that I leave. No idea to this day if I actually quit or was fired. Don't care. I have a job that fits me wonderfully now. I choose my own hours, work with people I like. It's amazing how much that changes things.

Good luck with whatever you decide. But remember, for every place you change it's another bridge you burn. Trust me, I've burnt my fair share. Screwed myself out of a job paying back my school loan - the night job.

You need to work at what will make you happy. If you like the hospital better, go for it. Make sure you have one job before you give up another if possible. If you are a good nurse they will take you back. I don't like to work nights and would not take a night job. I can understand you not wanting to work them. Of course we all have to do what we have to do.

A teeny suggestion, what about doing some per diem or part time at the hospital? You might see that it's not what you want. That way you would already have a fallback position at the clinic.

If you like it then give notice and go full time. My place would let you back within a year and not have to repeat most of the orientation.

If you left on good terms, be honest and tell the hospital you've learned more about yourself and what works for you. Don't forget to play up what you've learned at the other job. Hopefully your clinic manager won't send a negative rec about you. See if you can choose an area and promise to comit for a year to the area and stick to your promise, you'll build a reputation for keeping your word and more opportunities will come to you. Nursing careers are built on change but give yourself a goal to commit to building your knowledge base before you move on through different areas. Good luck!

Days, nights, doesn't matter. There are too many options out there to be stuck at a job you are not passionate about. As I write this, I have an interview next week. I worked the same hospital for over 11 years and just recently left d/t politics. I was offered things at the new place that have not manifested. I feel like we have alot of choices as nurses to be bored or unhappy.
