Hello everyone,

I am wondering what advice or resources can be be given to a new nurse manager? I don't foresee a reason why background shouldn't go well. I will be starting a position as a nurse manager at the VA hospital. I am just wondering if there are any resources I can be looking at now and how to approach this all being new?

Very good! The VA and corrections, I hear is slow that way. However, I hear good things about the VA, so you should do just fine. Keep us posted after you have a chance to settle in.... :) GL!

When I transitioned from the bedside to leadership I took the AONE and ACCN's online course called Essentials of Nursing Management. It was $600 but was worth 40 CEUs and totally worth the cost. I thought it was really helpful.

The biggest advise I can give you to start a notebook where you carry schedules, due dates for essential training of your employees, hire dates, list of floors able to float to. And then Phone numbers with names from housekeeping to executives!

Also use this a a way to track projects, conversations etc this allows you to research prior information/situations easily (ie dates due to quick notes) this will be invaluable as you learn and progress in your position.

BTW have you started yet? What facility? Inquiring minds and all lol
