New nurse jaded preceptor

Published

I'm a new grad, second career student. I went into nursing for a variety of reasons, one being the clique 'I want to help people.' I'm not naive or stupid and don't expect to change the world but I do want to be kind and compassionate. My preceptor is jaded, tells me all pts who come to the ED want drugs, that nurses for the most part are stupid and that he doesn't care about anyone. If I ask him 'aren't you going to tell that intern he put the chart in the wrong place?' He says 'why? That's not my job. He's just kind of an ass. He's a good teacher but not someone I would be friends with. He wants to come across as a tough guy but all I see is an ass. I'm learning a lot from him so my inclination is to just stick with it for the next six months but he's so jaded. I don't want to start my career off having been taught by someone who's so negative. Advice?

If at all possible, please discuss this with your department educator. This person should NEVER be allowed to precept - heck, I'd keep him completely away from new hires. Staff like him are dangerous. His expertise automatically puts him into "role model" status so naive newbies are likely to emulate that toxic attitude in efforts to resemble someone that they admire. Thank heavens you are more mature and able to recognize what is going on - seeing through to the real issue.

Once you are safely through the orientation process, I hope you feel comfortable to call him on that behavior. Once someone stands up to him, others are much more likely to realize what is going on.

Thank you so much for the advice. I agree. I guess I just don't want to make waves or be 'that person' but he's just too jaded to precept. I agree. Thanks!

I thought things would get better but they only got worse. He treats me very badly, breaks protocol all the time and I think he is not a safe practitioner. When I ask him about some of those things he'll respond that he just knows. He'll tell me to just memorize things because he doesn't want to look things up and explain where things are. He berated me for being slow last week after he just let me drown with two med administrations and proceeded to tell me I was delaying pt care, that my coworkers would have to pick up the slack and that no one would want to work with me and I would not last on the unit unless I learned to move faster. I can't stand the sight if him and have three more shifts with him this week. I'm hoping my boss can change my schedule around because I rather quick than have to learn from someone like that

Keep a log of this stuff and report him to your manager. Behavior like this is unacceptable and unsafe for everyone invloved.

You need to speak to your manager ASAP and address you concerns, and switch your preceptor.

I agree with the other posts...this NOT a person that should be precepting

My preceptor and I worked out our issues. It's going AMAZING now!!
