Hey guys ,
I've been a nurse since June and I’m looking to make the most out of the pandemic financially. So many seasoned nurse nurses are out here attaining financial freedom . I’m on a step down unit and I’ve been working hard to try to get to ICU . My manager tells me that after a year I may be able to go up to ICU . With that said, I was hoping to earn some extra money while that time comes because I’m not a person who just waits patiently. I like to be as productive with my time as possible. I was wondering what side hustles you think a new nurse should try to get at the moment . I was thinking about getting my medical coding certification since the course length is short . I’d love to hear you guys suggestions about what I should do next as I wait to try to get in the ICU .
I was honestly thinking about just leaving My residency and doing travel nursing On step down

As a newer nurse, you may not be desirable as a traveler. Your best bet may be to let everyone know that you'd like to pick up extra shifts ...staffing, your manager, your co-workers, etc. Ask them to call you first anytime extra staff is needed. You'll probably find takers.

Extra shifts, especially if there is some sort of critical staffing pay in addition to overtime will really earn the money.
I am a little confused about your goals. ICU pays the same as any other unit as far as I know. If you're looking for money, overtime on your unit is the easiest way to earn. If not, are there opportunities to pick up in other step down units? What about shift differential, some shifts are more profitable. I once worked with someone who was working a weekend night overtime holiday shift with critical staffing pay.
