New name for Dementia Wing

Published

I work at an assisted living fcaility and we have a new director who would like to change the name of our dementia wing. It is currently the memory wing. We would like it to be be something uprising and not to stimatize our loving residents. Does anyone have any ideas?

How about naming all the units/wings something neutral that has nothing to do with diagnosis, or even healthcare at all? I work in a psych facility in which each of the units is named for a different variety of tree (the overall name of the facility is tree-related, so it all fits together). What about varieties of birds, flowers, etc., particularly those native to your area, or names related to some local natural or historical site? There are so many possibilities.

The facility I worked at last called it Secure Care or SCU because of the special locks.

How about names that are significant for your area, such as lakes that are around you/Indian names, or any other names that may have significance for the area where they lived.

Specializes in ICU, SDU, OR, RR, Ortho, Hospice RN.

I know of a facility near where I work that each wing is named something different such as lighthouse wing and all the decor matches its name. Dogwood wing hence pictures etc signifiying dog woods and so on.

I agree change from Memory wing, that is kinda sad considering the type of patient you have there :(

We named the dementia unit "The Garden" because a garden has a little bit of everything in it and that pretty much explained our residents at the time. And we had plants in the common area where residents could watch tv. The residents (with help from us) would take care of the plants. It was really nice - the common area reminded you of home. There were couches and recliners with a large tv, dvd player, etc in an entertainment center.

in the alzheimer's facility i worked at many years we had 5 units they were named

azalea - a wing

bluebonnet _b wing

daffodil - d wing

english rose - e wing

and

gardenia - g wing

Thank you all for your input, we are discussing the new name at our next inservice which will be in February. I will let you all know what we named our Dementia wing at that time!!!

Specializes in Geriatric, post op.

I work on a Dementia unit too and the name is "Homestead". The staff refers to the wings as A, B, C, D or E but the patients and their families refer to them as Homestead, Chesapeake, Mill Landing etc. All landmarks in our area (other than Homestead!). I agree with you, "Memory" is not appropriate!
