New to MI, New RN, need career advice!!

U.S.A. Michigan

Hello,

I just moved to Detroit from Pittsburgh PA. I was hoping for a job at a local hospital (DMC, Beaumont, Henry Ford or U of M) and couldn't get an interview. SO.... Ive taken a job at a SNF/TLC. I have 2 job offers and want to know which would be better experience to get into a hospital.

Option 1: Midnight in Milford, 11p-7:30am. 120 bed facility. Nice facility, staff seems nice, but i worry i won't get enough experience.

Option 2: Westland/Livonia facility. Day light 7a-3:30p. facility is outdates and staff didn't seem too nice. I think i could get time management skills, more patient and department interaction, but i fear i won't like the facility.

Both options have their pros and cons, and im willing to do either one, but now it comes down to what will do better for me in the future.

any advice??

I'd love any insight?????

I'd go with the nicer facility personally. Nothing better then going to a job you hate everyday. They are both SNFs so they will likely be viewed be same by hospitals :)

Sorry I meant to say "viewed the same by hospitals"

I would go to the facility with a better staff that seem nicer. I think having a good staff is very important, especially if you are new. That can make or break your experience. I am kind of in the same situation, however I have not moved back yet. I am still out of state and just started submitting application after application to all the hospitals. Right now I work in corrections as a RN.

thank you both for the advice. Being new here and not having any networking connections to ask about their reputations. oddly enough, the place i dislike has a good training program, but i DO hesitate ALOT. I took both positions on friday and play on turning one down on monday :(

Good luck!!!!! I REALLY tried with the hospitals.... made resumes and letters specific to each job posting. I looked up directors and emailed them personally...... nothing. I think it was a combination of a new nurse and graduating from a school they don't know/out of state.

Good luck to you though!!!! Let me know how it works out. Where are you looking?

I applied to Henry Ford, Mclaren, all DMC hospitals, VA hospital, St Joseph Ann Arbor & St Joseph Oakland, and a hospital in Port Huron in Traverse City. Traverse City responded and asked for my transcripts and letters of recommendation, but I haven't heard anything. I am doing a phone interview with a hospital in Port Huron next week. I heard back from the Washtenaw County Jail, but they don't have anything full time to offer me...I also tried a couple psychiatric hospitals, but nothing from them as well. I don't know if it would make things easier to move back first and then start applying.

Did you just try Henry Ford Main campus is Detroit or did you try all Henry Ford hospitals? I know Henry Ford Wyandotte has positions open and so does Henry Ford West Bloomfield as well as Henry Ford Macomb. Unfortunately hospitals sometimes take awhile to respond. Same with Oakwood did you try all locations when searching for positions? They have locations in Dearborn (main), Heritage in Taylor, Southshore in Trenton, and Annapolis in Wayne. You could also try Beaumont in Troy or Royal Oak. Those are just some more options.

Good luck. The job market is tough right now.

Thank you! I tried them all! I will just keep filling out application. I did hear back from a psychiatric hospital in Michigan today, so that was encouraging. :)

I'm originally from the Milford area, but also as a new nurse I'd go with the facility that makes you feel the most comfortable.

I finally started to get some calls for interviews. I interviewed with the DMC, Henry Ford, and the VA so far. I have not heard anything back from the facilities though so I am going to keep applying. It was reassuring though to start to get some calls for interviews.
