I am about to begin the LVN program and am hearing alot about how the Vocational Nursing is dying out. I plan on transitioning to RN program when finished but was curious to know if it will he a waste of time in the LVN program seeing as they are going to be cut short. From my understanding the LVN program offers more clinical hands on training then the RN program so I see that as plus. Either way it will take two years for me to become an RN and I'm already about to start this program. I have learned you can't believe everything you hear so I'm trying to get additional feedback to what's been floating around. Thank you.

It depends on your area. Some still use LPN/LVN's in hospital settings while others do not. There will continue to be a need for LPN/LVN's in home health, assisted living, and long term care facilities. A couple of LPN's at my job even hold managment positions. And plus, its really competitive to get into RN programs. A few of the community colleges in my area hold spots in the program just for LPN's. So I think that becoming a LPN first is a smart idea imo. Good luck :)

This is a very good question! I am starting LPN school in 2 weeks, but my goal is to keep going until I reach MSN. Though the topic is interesting, but I think if your goal is to become RN, then it shouldn't really matter since you're planning on bridging over to RN. Maybe I'm not understanding your post correctly but you're not wasting your time doing LPN since for your RN, it'll just be more courses added on, it's not like starting over from scratch.

Hi!
I have decided to do an LPN program because I have spent the last year & a half finishing pre req's for an RN program only to be told I will be put on a waiting list for a yr, maybe 2! And was also told by the director that they don't turn LPN's away or place them on a waiting list if they have all their pre req's done. So I am going to go ahead go for LPN & re-apply! And @ least this way I can make more money working as an LPN while I bridge to RN. So I say go for it! Your going to have to be in school regardless! LOL!
Good Luck!

Wow that sucks, What state? In the Community College I applied to here in KY, they don't hold a waiting list. They go by GPA..
Hi bryantan508!
I'm in OH & the CC has a wait list as well as a private RN School! So I just have to keep pushing forward!

Thank you for posting this. I needed to know this myself. I am starting on Monday. I was worried that there was no use for LPN, but there is. LPN has positions that LVN dont have or want. LTC, Mental health, Methadone and Jails.
Plus sometime the bridge is 1 year. Good luck and thank u for the post

New LVN Student, I just finished LVN school in December and began working in February only because there are very few job openings in our area (South Texas) for LVN's; however, I am working for a home health but am starting school in about a week to transition to RN. I believe that going LVN first is a great idea and I am glad I did it because you get the opportunity to find out whether or not you are cut out for this field and you will also get a lot of hands on experience during clinicals (at least i did at my school). Good Luck, you will know right away if you love it!
